FINANCE AND COMMERCE.

RAM FAIR, SALE OF STUD SHEEP. HEAVY PASSINGS AND DULL COMPETITION. The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's ram fair was coneluded yesterday, when tho floek ewes and the stud rams were sold. There was an entry of 116 ewes and 231 rams, as compared with 100 ewes and 288 rams at the fair of 1931. The attendance of buyers and breeders was fair only, and was much smaller than on the first day or on the corresponding day last year. Flock Ewes. Tho sale of flock ewes was a procession of passings, with sales made at ridiculously low figures only. Of the 116 sheep offered 48 were sold and 68 were passed, so that it will be seen that tho auction was very disappointing to vendors. The only breed represented was the Southdown, and the only variation in frice for tho ten pens sold was from jgns to IJgns. Alexander Anderson, of Asliburton, and Mr D. "W. Wegtenra, of Dunsandel, shared the honour of top price Jots. The top price for floek ewes lost year was 3gns, secured for some English Leicester ewes. Tho top price for Soutlidowns was 2}gns. The Bam Auction. The ram auction was interesting only in few stages, and with the exception of the Southdown breed the market was dull, with passings very heavy and prices for all except the best show sheep very low indoed. Bams which were showing lack of condition or which were not well produced were practically neglected throughout the day, and even for moderate sorts the auctioneers had a hard task to exceed tho upset price of sgns, if they could secure even that. About 225 sheep were offered at auction in the ring, and of that number 111 failed to find purchasers while under the hammer —50 per cent, of passings Veiy few were cleared at private sale. Southdown Values. The two principal fattening breeds shared the principal attention —Southdowns and English Leiccsters —and tho former provided easily tho most interesting sale of the day, with prices quite fair for the really good quality sheep. Southdowns attracted a steady demand for sheep true to type showing outitanding quality both for carcase and bone, and a casual glance at values would suggest that there was quite a material advance on those ruling at last year's fair. For the very best show aheep that was ,probably correct, as buyers were prepared _to extend their limits to take the best, but of the body of the sale, which included the moderate and poorer quality sorts, values wero no better than thoso of 1931. Tho top prico for tho breed was 05gns, secured for a one-shear ram sold on account of H. J. Andrew, of Maheno. Andrew's blood is known even outside New Zealand, and this sheep was produced in a manner which did the breeder credit. The same breeder also ■old another at The second best priea was SOgns, secured for a fine ram sold on account of that old-established breeder, George Mcßean (Springston South). He is going out of the business, and this was one of the last two rams he had left. The other was also sold, being knocked down at 33gns. Last year the top price for Southdowns was 42gn», secured by 9. J. Andrew also. In 1930 one of Andrew's topped the market at 62gns. Oorriedales Ignored. The Corriedale sheep were not wanted, and out of the 31 sheep offered S3 were passed in at auction. It was one of the dullest markets seen for this breed for a long time. Nothing but the very best type of sheep was sought at all. The best price/paid at auction was ISgna, this value being paid for one sola on account of William Baynor (Masterton). A sheep offered on - account of the Estate of H. T. Little (Hui Bui) was passed in when the auctioneer had reached 55gns, Another fine ram offered on account of William Anderson (Waiau) was passed in at 17*gns. t . ' There were ten Shropsbires offered and six of them were passed. The best price for the breed was 30gns, which was the priea paid for one sold on account of Charjes" Parry (Tinuuru) before it bad had an opportunity to be offend in the ring. It was a magnificent example of the breed.' Eight Bomney M«tsh were put up at auction and pne only found a buyer." It was' a sorry sale. The one sold was at 14gna on account of the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. English Leicestera English Leicestera provided a good deal of interest. There were 71, sheep offered and 41 failed to find buyers, but the principal reason for such heavy passing* was that the breed had a bad "tail" of inferior quality sheep. There was far too much unevenness and on many occasions the auctioneers did not secure a bid at all. Good sheep were sought keenly with competition not restricted to snch clearly defined limits as in the case of most of the other breeds. It was also noticeable that buyers were in the market for Leieesters with the intention of securing them for the purpose of crossing witli Merinos. The top price for the section was SOgns, secured for one sold on account of W. Letham (Laulriston). One sold on account of James Beid, Darfleld, brought 37|gns, and one on account of A. S. Elworthy (Timaru) SOgns. The top prico for English Leicester last year was 43gns. Five Lincolns were offered and William Bayner of Masterton secured the three top prices with one at 18gns, one at 15gns, and one at 14gns. Border Leicesters. Tho Border Leiceßters were "not in demand and their sale was very disappointing to vendors. Out of the 34 lots offered 24 were . passed at auction. Colonel John Findlay of Eiffelton soeured the top price with one at 20gns, but a very fine average was secured on account of the well-known breeder, J. L. Mafffarlane, Lyndon. Ho sold two .at 16gns, one at 15gns, and one at lOgns. The sales were 1 as follows: SOUTHDOWN. The Mew Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. sold on account of:— C. F.
