£SOOO DAMAGE.

FIRE AT ADDINGTON. CONFECTIONERY FACTORY DESTROYED. ! The premises of Clark's, Ltd., confectionery manufacturers, at 26 Harnian street, Addington, were by fire early yesterday.'.morning. With the complete loss of the building, a large wood and iron structure, plant, and stock, the damage, is estimated at over £SOOO. The lire is. believed to have com- j merited in the north-east corner of the building, near the furnaces- The outbreak uiij discovered at about 3 a.m., the Haines being-noticed from the top floor of the ZtJaljindia Milling Company by an employee, who gave die alaiiu. The tfafiiew had a very strong hold, however, and by the time engines from the Central and Sydenham stations arrived on the scene little remained to be ■ done but to prevent» the fire from spreading to the neighbouring houses and the company's .itore. The blaze was a spectacular one, the building becoming a red- 1 hot -slicfl, with the wooden lining and stocks of sweets and sugar providing fuel of the most inflammable nature. The glare' attracted a large crowd of spectators, but by 5 o'clock the building and the machinery :it contained were reduced to scrap-iron. The services of the fire ■ brigade were still required at 6 o'clock and it was not until 7.30 that the last engine left. Tiio store-room and a good proportion of the rstock were considerably damaged by the flames. Employees were working in the factory until 9 o'clock the previous evening, and Mr E. H. Clark, the manager. inspected the premises before he went home at that time. The factory has been working overtime recently filling Easter orders, the loss of which ' will further seriously affect the company. JVlr Clark estimates the material damage at £SOOO. The British Traders' and Yorkshire Offices hold the in.siir.'iiice risks, which total about ,£2500.
