WHEAT RESEARCH.

meeting of institute. LABORATORY WORK. The quarterly meeting, of the Wheat Research Institute was held yesterday, Dr. H. G. Denham presiding. Present were: Dr. F- W. Hilgendorf (director); Messrs J- -1-o*j Piatt, It. K. Ireland, C. H. Hewlett, A. Jones, 0. E. Boon, F. W. Hawker, J. W. Hadfield, H. G. Cannons, W. W. Mulholland, Jas. Cair, and P. K- Talbot. The chairman said that tlie finances were in a rather better position than was anticipated. , _ - On the motion ot Mr Ireland, it was decided that a sub-committee should be set up to report concerning the position of Jumbuk wheat in the trials, and that the executive should take such steps as it thought necessary in connexion with it for next season. The chairman said that it would be convenient if the December 2nd meeting was held at Lincoln College, so that the plots could be inspected. It had, been an eye-opener on farmers' day .to see the interest taken by the visitors in the wheat experimental plots. The second annual report had been prepared, and would appear shortly, said Dr Hilgendorf. In return for the first report a series of very .valuable publications had been received, some—especially those from Holland and Russia— being from periodicals that would not otherwise have been available I n addition to this numerous requests for the report were still being received from important research stations that had been overlooked, or supplied inadequately, in the first distribution. The report also enables the Institute to make some return to numerous institutions that have previously

given it valuable information regarding their methods and results. Laboratory Work. The chief work at the laboratory in the beginning of the year was the testing of moisture in wheat for farmers and millers, and the milling and baling of millers' samples . for grading and blending purposes. Something over 300 samples had been tested for moisture, and it was fouiid that this work was bringing into contact with the Institute a number of farmers who would noti otherwise realise the work that was being done., These services, however, restricted research work, and there was thus, as was the case last year, no special laboratory report for this quarter. Dr. Frankel had made a rapid tour of the wheat-growing districts just before harvest, and had visited all the variety trials laid down by the Department of Agriculture. Dr. Hilgendorf, with Mr West and Dr. Frankel, spent one day together on a of the nearby wheat-growing districts, to observe general conditions and in especial the work of several headers. Machines in operation now numbered 63, and most of the season was very favourable for their operation. The next meeting is to be held on June 23rd.

I . •' " The landsman interested in shipping will be surprised at how many types of watercraft the word "vessel" stands for. In London; "vessel" officially includes any ship, lighter, keel, barge, launch, houseboat, pleasure or other boat, randan, "wherry, skiff, dinghy, shallop, punt, canoe, yacht, raft, float of timber, or craft whatever, whether navigated by steam or otherwise. Among the foregoing are several which are more unUsual than others. A randan is a boat worked by three rowers the one amidships using two oars. A wherry means a light, shallow, rowing boat for plying on rivers: Shallop is a light, open boat.' A float of timber is a small pile being towed by a row-boat.
