ALLEGED THREAT TO SHOOT. STRUGGLE WITH ARMED MAN. (PRESS ASSOCIATE* TXLEOBAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 15. - Detective Meiklejohn and Constable Tocker had an uheviable experience la.st night at Tikorangi, when it is alleged that they -were threatened by Christian de Bink with a doublcbarrelled shotgun on attempting to arrest him on four charges of false pretences. One barrel of the gun was discharged when' the man was rushed and overpowered by Detective Meildejohn. \ De Kink, who had beep living near Tikorangi for about two months, was wanted on four charges alleging that he had obtained; from A. A.' Corban and Sons, of Wellington, various quftntiites of wine, totalling in value £65 ISs.on the false representation that they had been ordered by four different residents of Wellington, some oj? them licensees' of . hotels. officers weni to the house to arrest de Rink. He had evidently received information that the police were after him and ho gained possession of a shotgun., He. mot the officers with this when he returned at about 8.30 p.m. Detective Meiklejohn was on guard at the back of the. place and it is alleged that the man at once pointed the .gtin him and threatened to shoot if he attempted an arrest.

After a little parleying the detective approached the mail) who made off io the da?k. . The detective called to the constable •who was on guard at the front of the' house that de Eink had a gun. The man returned in. a quarter of an. honr and seemed more defiant. The officers did their test, to pacify him and to persuade him to submit quietly, but he refused.

Bushed and Thrown. Detective Meiklejohn, at an opportune moment while Constable Tqcker had de Kink engaged in conversation, rushed the man, grabbing him under the free arm and getting his other arm across to the arm which still held the gun. De Rink made a last desperate struggle, in which one barrel of the gun was discharged, but the shot went wide of both officers. De Eink was; thrown and subsequently brought to New Plymouth. De Eink was brought before the Court tbis morning, where, in addition to the charges relating to falsa jjretences, he was also charged that with intent to resist lawful apprehension he attempted to discharge a firearm at Detective Mqiltlejohn and Constable Tocker. He wsa remanded to appear on March 23rd.
