Arthur Patrick McGuire, a labourer, ageS 36, pleaded guilty to charges of "dealing 2a in money, the property, of Vera Hamilton, and of stealing a brief bag valued at £2O, the property of James Car michael Pairman, both offences being dated M Tht Magistrate rebuked accußed for stealing a doctor's instruments stating that _it might havo meant a matter of hf» and was convicted and seven days' imprisonment with hard labour on the first charge and six months imprisonment with hard labour on the second. THEFT OF BICYCLE. Alfred Wilmot, a labourer, aged 22, was charged with stealing a bicycle valued at £3 IDs, the property of Douglas Henry Day, on March 13th. ■ l j He pleaded guilty, and was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. STOLEN CHEQUES. James Henry Hitchins, a watchms&er, aged 49, pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing four cheques, to the value of iW 17s Sd, the property of J. Edward McD. Rountree, on March 3rd. Chief-Detective Carroll said that Hitchins had visited a tailor's shop and had attempted to buy some clothing, prodycnig a bundle of four cheques in payment. These cheques had previously been reported stolen. The tailor, on enquiring about one of the cheques, found that it was false. Hitchins wafa later arrested, and his plea was that he had found the cheques in the street. Hitchins was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. CHARGE OF BREAKING AND ENTERING. Arthur William Vincent Wilson, a labourer, agod 22, Leonard Walter Downing, a flourmiller, aged 33, and Stanley Gibbard Hazeldine, a labourer, aged 25, we're charged wi|h breaking and. entering by night the house of John Joseph Cotter, at 441 Colombo street, and with committing theft therein. This caea arose out of the- robbery at . the. Club Hotel, Sydenham, on the morning of January lßt last. John Joseph Cotter, residing at 403. Durham street, until recently manager of the Club Hotel, Sydenham, said that at ; about 10.45 p.ni. on December 81st he left his office, leaving the hotel about midnight and returning in about %n hour. The office was closed and intact when he went to bed. At about 5.40 a.m. he went downstairs to the office, found the door open, and the safe gone. The safe contained the cash for the past four days' takings and papers, to the value of about £2OO in all. About JE43 was witness's own property, the rest belonging to the company. The doors were locked before he retired' that night. Cecilia Margaret Cotter, the wife of the previous witness, said that she left the office secure at about 30.45 p.m. on December. 31st. Detective J. B. Finlay read a statement made by Wilson stating that _he Lad been employed merely as a ta?i-driver and that lie had not been an accomplice. The others, Downing and Hazeldine, had admitted stealing the safe, breaking it open, throwing tile remains into the Waimakariri river, and sharing the.contents, which 'they estimated at £6O. " s.
