"BACK TO THE HORSE."
A BRISBANE DISPLAY. "Back to the horse" was celebrated in Brisbane lately, when a procession through the city was headed by the Premier, Mr Moore, mounted on a police remount, accompanied by the Minister for Transport, Mr G. Morgan, who was similarly mounted, and the Lord Mayor, Mr Greene, who rode a grey horse. Following was a string of horse vehicles nearly half a mile in length; 80 hacks, led by the Equestrienne Club; commercial horse vehicles, more saddle horses, including station blood horses, and 50 boys and girls on ponies. Some of the vehicles bore slogans, such as "Eight horses in the city will keep one family on the land." Whilst there is a general claim that there is a decided move back to the use of the horse as against mechanical power, an American paper says that horses have become such curiosities on the streets of Chicago that to-day only one of the city's ten remaining blacksmith shops is doing sufficient business to retain as many as two fulltime employees. An investigation by the Chicago Association of Commerce discloses that in the 210 square miles making up the city there are only ten horseshoeing establishments, and that all of these combined boast' a collective working force of only elevon men. Tn regard to New Zealand the increase in farm tractors between 1930 and 1931 (to January) was from 3891 to 5023 —1132. In the preceding year (1929 to 1930) the increase was only , SW.
