NOTES AND COMMENTS

(STEIIAL TO THE l'Rfc'.SS ' TI.MAJiI', February 10. The Dominion furlong title-holder, G. Bridson, (Auckland), convincingly demonstrated his superiority as a sprinter over the Canterbury staiy D. I\ Lindsay, by a brilliant swiin in the 2'JO yards championship, to retain the honour. Bridson's speedy effort was indicated by tlie fact that although the time was 1 3-ssee outside his own national figures, he clipped 3 3-ssec off the time he won the title in at the last championship meeting. The Aucklander gained on his opponents in the dive and at 25 yards, showing the way to Lindsay and Stokes. Making the pace, he coveted the first lap in lilsec, Stokes being just behind him and Lindsay following. At the turn at 75 yards Bridson bad increased his lead to a length from Lindsay, who speeded up. The Aucklander was golnj* splendidly and had a two lengths' advantage, which lie maintained over the final lap, Lindsay losing ground eonsiderably through fouling the line. Though lie made a bid to get up, Bridson won by three yards from Lindsay, with Stokes three yards back. McConville withdrew at. the half distance.

A Good Exhibition. Auckland took all the points by undoubted superiority in the women's .100 yards backstroke championship. The title-holder, Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland) gave- a splendid exhibition, but lia.d no difficulty in winning from her team-mate Aliss Stratton, bv two yards, with Miss Lewin (Auckland) a similar distance back. The Auckland ers, swimming practically abreast, drew ahead of the Canterbury girls, Miss Campbell arul Miss Jierry, at 75 yards »nd M iss Stratton turned just in advance of the champion. Miss Farquhar's cleaner and more driving stroke, however, soon gave her Hie lead and she was never troubled over (lie final 30 yards. Miss I-'arquhtti-'s time was '2 1-jsec slower than Miss E. Stockley's New Zealand record, but she reduced her Jasfc championship time by 5 ]-osec.

Title Retained. The .Munawatu title-holder of the \ arils breast-stroke championship, L Smith, had no difficulty- in retaining his title against the challengers, E. C. Herd ("Canterbury) and K. Sprv (Wellington). Smith improved h-is last championship time liv 1 4-osc't- and was only two under his own record. Displaying an easv und powerful driving stroke he ci:veri'd r!ip fir.bt lap and was in advance of Herd and Spry at the turn, but at 75 yards the champion's smooth stroking began to fell, enabling him to forge ahead, and at 100 yards he was leading by two yards. lie gradually forced the pace to win by 10 yards from Spry, who slowed up iri the final stages lo gaiu second place. Women's Divir.g. The Otago girl, Miss J. Eggcrs, who gave a magnificent display of diving in the final stages, retained her title

.•{gainst the challenge of Miss Tj. Hood (Hawkc's Bay), whose exhibition was not up to the form she displayed on Saturday.

A Great Struggle,

A great struggle was witnessed in the 440 yards women's championship, which was won hy Miss P. Robertson (Auckland), succeeding to the crown which was not defended by thp holder. The starters were Miss S. Bracefield (South Canterbury), Miss H. «T. Ellis (Canterbury), Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland), Miss M. Mathieson (Otago), and Miss P. Robertson (Auckland). Miss Farquhar set the pace for 200 yards, and Miss Mathieson swam with her stroke for stroke .iust ahead of Miss Robertson. The first 100 yards took 78sec. Miss Farquhar withdrew after carrying Miss Robertson along for this distance, and the Aucklander had half a length advantage at the 220 mark, which took 3min Bsec. Miss Mathieson and Miss Robertson staged a neck and neck struggle over the next 150 yards, but the Aucklander had the stamina to forge ahead of the tired Otago girl to win by five yards. Miss Ellis retired early. Miss S. Braeefield was about a lap away third.

Lindsay's Triumph. 11. I'. Lindsay, the Canterbury star, scored a great triumph by decisively defeating the Aucklander, G. Bridson, and annexing the half-mile title in time that was considerably slower than the winner's record, though lie flipped 16 3rsse'; off Bridson's time at the previous championships. D. Reid (South Canterbury) did not start, leaving Lindsay, Stokes (Canterbury), Newall (Otago), and Bridson (Auckland) to contest the event. Stokes made the pace over the first 200 yards. with Lindsay slightly behind Bridson. The first 100 yards was covered in ijGsec and 200 yards in 2vnin SSsec. Bridson then assumed a slight lead from Lindsay, the pair swimming on terms until 300 yards, where Lindsay quickened his stroke, taking the lead at 350 yards. Lindsay was stroking perfectly and covered the quartermile in smin 31sec, and, speeding up gradually, lie dropped the Aucklander, who was swimming a crooked course, fouling the lanes. Lindsay won by 35 yards, with Stokes C 5 yards back.

A meet of provincial delegates ;iud divers attending the New Zealand senior swimming championships was held yesterdav morning, when it was decided to recommend the New Zealand Swimming Council to adopt the new diving handbook of the International Federation. MV P. Coira (Wellington) presided, and there were also, present Mrs F. Thompson, Misses D. Brown (Christchurch), L. (Dunedin), Messrs W. Keesing (West Coast), •T. JfcTndoe (Dunedin), Mathicson (Dunedin) M Walker (Dunedin). I?. Calder (Punedin)' A. Morrison (Timaru), I<\ G. Raymond (Timaru). W. Warlton (Timarij), fii. E. Lyons (Christchurch), L. Patton (Christchurch) The chairman said that the conference had been called to see if something could not be done to bring; the rules of diving up to date It had been apparent for the last few years tnat the rules were obsolete and out or date Unfortunately, the latest handbookissued by the International Federation was in the hand? of very few members. As the new rales were international, he was of the opinion that they should be adopted in their entirety. Them were several alterations in the new M fl ■ Une wae that no compulsory dive lTusnt be repeated as a voluntary dive. Each oive could only be clone once, off anv board Arotlior important question was that of marking. Tha new system provided for five judges, a referee, and two secretaries. Each judge would he given a series of numbers trom 0 to 10, and at the conclusion of each dive he would hold up the number he (:ioir;ht the dive should be marked for. Tlio hi-.'hest p.nrl lowest awards would lie. si ruck out and the average marking would be taken from the remaining three. The winner of tho the <m» wfeo re-

ceived the greatest number of points. In the event of a tie, the awards would be made to the competitor securing the greatest number of points in compulsory dives, ana in the event o? a further tie the greatest <iegree of difficulty would be taken into account. * If a diver executed a dive other than that announced, no points would be given. Another point raised was that a take off with one foot was now ;not permitted in spring-board diving. An alteration had been made in the number of dives Men were required to do fivt« compulsory and five voluntary, and ladies three compulsory and three voluntary dives. The motion, amended as a recommendation to the New Zealand Council that the rules be put into effect at once and that Centres obtain copies of the handbook, wa* carried unanimously. A further motion was carried that at each championships the judges should hold a conference to set the dives for next year.
