her rider in the early part of the Flying Handicap. Taking a line through her two Trentham performances, a so ven-furlong journey would seem to suit her. and she may be seen to advantage in (lie Craven Plaie on. Saturday. A Valuable Supporter. Mr «T. iL Samson produced no fewer than sixteen starters at the Dunedin 'Meeting last week, in four cases having two representatives in one race. The results were not very remunerative, as his record for the two days was one win, one second, and one third placing, and his share of the stake money was £.125. Mr Samson had to "wait until the concluding event to gain his one success, and the public showed their appreciation of his valuable assistance to the club and to racing generally liy giving the winner, Princess Argosy, an enthusiastic reception on her return to the enclosure. Despite his expensive exploits with such a big team, Mr Samson presented the rider of Princess Argosy with a substantial present 1o supplement the usual winning rider's fee. Jockey Disciplined. "Evidently the days of tick-tacking are not over in Australia, as quite recently W. Foley, a cross-country jockey, was brought before the stewards of the Moonee Valley (Victoria) Kacing Club on the charge of having conveyed information by ways of signals from the paddock reserve in connexion with the last race. The stewards suspended him for three months for the offence.

TURF GOSSIP.

Reminders. j dominations for the Banks Peninsula Summer Meeting, to be held on March oth, will close at 6 p.m. to-day. Acceptances for the Summer Meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club and a subscription of 3 sovs for the Middle Park Plate will be due at 8 p.m. tomorrow. A Proposed Trip. Compris is likely to be taken to Sydney for the Autumn Meetings. It was intended to nominate him for the Sydney Cup and Doncaster Handicap, but the closing date was overlooked, and is now to be entered for other distance events and weight-for-age races. He has been allotted a solid weight, but not more than he deserved, for the Midsummer Handicap, and in view of the trip is not likely to fulfil his engagement. A Bright Future. The Quprn created a very favourable - impression by his win at AVingatui on Saturday, and provided he continues to stand lip to his work, lie will not be long in recouping his owner for his outlay to date. By Hunting Song from Flagship, dam of the consistent performer, dancv Lee, he solicited keen competition when offered at the 1930 • yearling sales at Trentham, and Dr. Louisson had to go to 525 guineas to secure him. Flagship is an eighteen-year-old marc by Monoform from Little Mabel, by Medallion, and was not raced. She was not represented at the j two last sales, but her owner, Mr I?. W. Todd, of Opoti&i, has a yearling - from her by The Ace. The Quom was entered for the Trial Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday next, but his Wingajtui win has made him ineligible to eom- ' pete.

Judgment Astray. Arden's Beauty, the surprise winner of the Hopeful Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday, showed a turn of speed in her earlier efforts, but owing to going sore a few days prior to the Meeting she lost the bulk of the following she would probably otherwise have attracted. Submitted by Mr G. Kain as a yearling at Trentham, she was bought for 40 guineas by Mr A. Murdoch, of Dunedin, who, however, was afterwards not satisfied with her, owing to her small build, and on the same day transferred her at a small advance to her present owner, who is a son of the Mosgiel trainer, R. R. McDonald. Mr Kain offered a half-brother by Rosenor to Arden's Beauty at Friday's sale at Wingatui, but although an attractive youngster and built on much more soiid lines than the filly, there was little bidding for him, and be was passed in at. 11 guineas. The reserve was later fixed at 30 guineas, but no buyer was forthcoming. On. Saturday, however, after Arden's Beauty won,' there were several enquiries for him, but Mr Kain decided to withdraw him from tlia ■market.

Two Likely Visitors. The Wingatui owner-trainer 1). P. Wilson intends to bring Black Duke and Assemble to next Saturday's Meeting > at Ricearton. He also nominated Pink Paper (Paper Money—All Pink) for the Trial Stakes, but the three-year-old broke down last week and has been turned out. Black Duke was looking as well as ever at last week's Meeting, and ran three solid races, but found the company a little too select. His best distance at this stage of his career appears to be a mile and a quarter, and with 8-6 on his back will have to be seriously considered for the Midsummer Handicap. Assemble was expected to race prominently in her engagements, but luck was against her. She lost her chance by being the last awav on the first day, and on Saturdav lost

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders. Acceptances for the Kaikoura T.C.'s Annual Meeting close today at 7 p.m. dominations for the two' trotting events on the Bank's Peninsula R.C.'s programme close to-day at 6 p.m. dominations for the South Wairarapa J .C. 3 Meeting close on Thursday next at S p.m. dominations, for the Invercargill T.C.'s Annual Meeting close on Friday next at 5 p.m. Author Jinks RecSmmissioned. A lease of Author Jinks lias been acquired by the dc\v Brighton ownertrainer, E. It. Husband, and the gelding has joined that mentor's stable. The last race Author Jinks had was in the final of Wrackler's New Zealand Cup in 1029, when he finished second. He had an enforced spell after that Meeting, but he was brought into work again by J. Young just prior to last Easter. Ail efforts to get him to stand another preparation proved fruitless, however, and he was sent to the paddock again. Being brought in recently, he bears the appearance of having done well during his spell, and he has put on much condition. His new mentor has attained quite a fair measure of success -frith unsound horses, and if he gets his new charge to go soundly there should be another race or two in him yet. Another addition to the same stable is the five-year-old John Jinks, who has proved more or less a disappointment since he performed so auspiciously at the latter end of the 1928-1929 season, and the early part of the following year. Grasa Track Open To-day.

The grass track at the Xcw Brighton Trotting Club's course will be open this morning for horses engaged at the club's approaching fixture. Latest Importation. The English-bred pacer,' Miss Joan Dire'ct, arrived at Auckland on Friday and she has now gone into quarters at F. Smith's stable at Epsom. N.Z. Metropolitan T.C.'s Programme. The programme for the New Zealand Metropolitan T.C.'s Easter Meeting has been issued. There is a substantial drop in the stakes, as compared with last year. The principal events, which were formerly of 1000 sovs, have been decrease 4by 450 sovs. The* chief event on the first day is the Easter Handicap, of 550 sovs, a 4min 29sec class, while on the second day the President's Handicap, of the same value, is the big attraction, and the class is 4min 28scc. The sprinters have been provided for by a 250 sovs, 2min 43sec class mile and a quarter races each day, and for unhoppled trotters the Autumn and Summer Handicaps, of 250 sovs and 300 sovs respectively, arc the principal events. The former is a 4min 40sec class two-mile race, while the Summer Handicap is of one mile and a half, for 3min 27sec class horses. Ex-Canterbury Horse. Jester, who was formerly trained at Addington by P. G. Holmes, will be making his first appearance since he was taken north by E. S. Groat, when he goes out to contest the Waiheke Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. Although' Jester did not win a race last season he was in the money three times and favoured with a little luck he would have been returned a winner.

POVERTY BAY MEETING. (i'KBSG ASSOCIATION TBLfcGSAM.) GISBORNE, February 15. The Poverty Bay Turf Club's races, which were postponed on Salyivday on account of the weather, have been further postponed until to-morrow. PHAR LAP. REASONS FOR POSTPONEMENT i OF MATCH RACE. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—TiV ELECTRIC TELKGKAPH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received February 15th, 7.10 p.m.) VANCOUVER, February 14. Although the match race between Pliar Lap and the three other representative horses has been called oft" because the owners considered the visitor -wa* not rounding into'shape quickly euough to run on February 21st,. there is do question about his starting in the big race on March 20th. It is understood that the owners did not relish the idea of showing off their horses at their best before- the main event, and if next Sunday Phar Lap had proved not to be extended to -win, his position before the public would be prejudiced. The owners see no reason' whv (lie horse should not lie on the top of his form on .March 20th. Elliott (the jockey) joins the training cajiip- at Agua Caliente on. Wednesday.
