The Abattoir, Reserves, and Milk Committee reported that the ActingDistrict Engineer of the Railway Dertment had written advising that he •as prepared to accede to the Council's creation that the railway laud between Sehvvn and Antigua streets should be cleaned up and dug over, preparatory to the planting of shrubs *.o be planted and maintained by the Councommittee had therefore arranged with the Superintendent of Reserves to provide suitable shrubs for (jig., purpose, as it was considered that this work would beautify what was at present an extremely untidy and unsightly approach to the City. THo By-laws and Finance Committee reported that arrangements had been made with tho owner of property situated on the western corner of Edgeware road and Trafalgar street for the dedication of a piece of land for rounding the corner, similarly to the work recently carried out at the opposite corner. Xo expenditure would be incurred in connexion with the rounding of the corner until after tho close of the present financial year. Electricity Committee. Tie Electricity Committee recommended that the tender of N. McGiliivray, of £3OB, be accepted for the erection of a sub-station in Fitzgerald avenue. town Planning, Housing, and Health. The Town Planning, Housing, and Health Committee reported that Messrs Paynter and Hamilton had applied for permission to erect a motor garage in front of a building situated at No. 11S Hetky- avenue. The site was at present occupied by a large building used as flats, and as thero was not sufficient clearance on either side of the building Id provide a drive-way, it was desired to erect the garage on the streetline. An application had been received for permission to erect a motor garage in front of the premises at No. 8 Norwich street. There was only a clearance of three feet on one side of the house and rii feet on the other. Mr J. A. Millar had asked permission to erect a motor garage in front of the premises at No. 107 Bolter street. There iKTs not sufficient clearance on either side of the house to permit the erection of a garage at the rear of the premises. The Committee recommended that jpecial permits, under the provisions of Section 8 (4) of By-law No. 15 he jranted for the erection of these srages. Mr T. L. Uren has applied for pcrmssion to erect a hoarding on a vacant settion situated in Main North road, Pa-jauuir* "The Committee proposed to inspect the site beforo making a recommendation in connexion with the matter. At : tie meeting of the Council held on December 20th last, the Committee recommended the passing of a special jresolutions approving of the subdivision of property situated in Fitzgerald avenue into throe sections, two of 19.01 each, and the balance 1.9S perishes, upon which the M.E.D. proposes to erect a sub-station.

The matter was referred to a subcommittee, which had inspected the site sad expressed its approval of the proposal. Th?/following applications for approval of subdivisions of land were approved:— - (a) C. if. Barnett, sen., Pt. U.S. 197, Avon road. No building permit tube issued in respect of Lot 1. (b) •Warners, Ltd. Pt. Lot 1, D.P. 7193, Pt, T.S. 700, Cathedral square. The report was adopted. .Water Supply and "Works. The Water Supply and Works Committee reported that the Engineer to the Christchurch Drainage Board has rabmittecl alternative prices for the installation of the sewer pipes in Southampton street extension as follows: — , (a) Six-inch sewer in middle of road to discharge Tennyson street, £l3l. (b) !Fonr-inch sewers, one in each footpath of the new road, discharging to lanhole .at intersection of Croydon and Southampton streets, £ll2. The Board recommended that scheme ft) be adopted, as in addition to being proposition it would obviate the necessity of opening up the roal " and when house connexions were 'paired.
