P. AND O. DEBENTURES. LONDON, February 12. P. and O. debentures. 20s 9d. DISEASE IN TOBACCO. NELSON CROPS AFFECTED. Owing to the prevalence of disease among the Nelson tobacco crops a meeting of growers, under the auspices of the Tobacco Growers' Executive, was hold recently. Dr. Curtis, of the Cawthron Institute staff, who was present by invitation, said the disease was one known as crosaic, and whicti was also a virus disease. She described at length the symptoms of the disease, and also the steps that should bo taken to counteract it. ■ It was resolved that the Tobacco Growers' Executive in concert with the tobacco instructors confer with the Cawthron Institute, and take whatever steps may bo considered necessary. At a subsequent meeting of the executive it was decided circular embodying the symptoms of tlie disease and the methods of. prevention be sent to every grower in thp'district, and that the Cawthron Institute be asked to consider the question of a comprehensive survey of the district with a view to possible research. ft was explained that although tin; disease had made its appearance it had not reached a stage that called for undue alarm, but that if the matter was not taken in hand the disease would rapidly spread with disastrous results to the industry.
HIGHER TAX ON BEER.
LESS REVENUE. The Brewers' Society ot England lias issued a statement pointing out that the excise returns of tlie amount ot beer produced during, October last show a big decrease, like those tor September. ''September brewings," it is stated, ''revealed a decline ol 'il p<y cent., representing 344,7Cti barrels, as against the corresponding period of 1930. October returns evidence a decline of '2(j.84 per cent., u decrease of 421,234 barrels oil the figures for October, 1930. "In brewing circles further declines in output are anticipated, and the estimate by the trade generally is that the new tax (of Id per pint) will probably produce about £500,000, ■ instead of £4,500,000. "The extra tax has so tar failed to produce revenue for' which it was put • in, has seriously affected the employment of brewery workers and allied trades, has put many licensed victuallers into financial difficulties, and has '.seriously hampered thn market for British barley and hops."
