CYCLING.

CANTERBURY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. G. R. GILES WINS TWO TITLES. In glorious weather at English Park on Saturday afternoon, the Canterbury amateur cycling championships provided keen racing among fields which were evenly matched; and although two of the province's outstanding riders, F. J. Grose and T. E. O'Brien, were not competing, there were several good performances. There has been little racing fpr cyclists in Christchurch this season, this probably accounting for the fact that the fields were smallei than has been usual in past years. The standard of racing suggested that had Grose and O 'Brien been present they 'would have found places in all three championship events, but Grose i 8 at present in Auckland, and O'Brien did not appear at the meeting. The mobt successful competitor. was G. B. Giles, winner of the half-mile and three miles titles. Giles rode well in all races except his heat of the one mile, when he showed bad judgment in the last 200 yards, and was beaten for a place in the final. In the other events he did better, and was the first to cross the finishing line in exceedingly close contests. Last year's winner of the one mile, L. J. Pearce, did not ride well, and was in need of solid training. He won his heat comfortably, but H. E. Young rode splendidly in the final to beat him by three-quarters of a length. Another rider who did not show his' best form was S. Campbell, who, though placed in all events, found a second in the half-mile the best he could do. Young, besides winning the one mile, rode into second place in the throe miles and finished fourth in the halfmile. In this race, Pearce finished strongly in third place, but had come up on the inside of the track and was disqualified, Young being placed third. A promising junior cyclist was li. J. Douglas, who won the junior mile without difficulty, and was first in his heat of the one mile open. J. L. Richards, New Zealand amateur road cycling champion, won the handicap event m good time. Five races for runners were incluuuJ in' the programme, the finish of the 7o yards handicap being particularly good. J. C. Harbutt gaining the verdict by inches from a bunched field. There was a great race for first place in the one mile, W. L. Sargison and H. O. 11. Savage racing together for the last 150 yards, for the former to win by the barest of margins. A. Mather was running well in this race, but threw away his chances by miscounting the laps anil finishing with only three-quarters of the distance covered. Details of the racing are as follows: CYCLING EVENTS. HALF MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. (Present Champion, F. J. Grose.) „ I^ rs ' H S at — s - Campbell 1, H. E."'Young 2, E. W. Stevens 3.
