LAWN TENNIS.

SENIOR COMPETITION. LEADING PLAYERS BEATEN. There v.cre some surprising individual performances in the seventh round matches in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's senior competition, played at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon, but there were no upsets in the teams' results. Beating Fendalton 1 without the loss of a match, Canterbury College I. maintained. their unbeaten record, and their place at the head of the competition table. Avoiiside, the second team, had an equally easy win over St. Aioans, while United i., and Cashmere were successful against I' endalton LI. an United 11. respectively. Linwood gained their first win of the competition over Canterbury College 11. The weather was perfect for tennis, while the courts, although showing signs of wear after a dry season, played very fast. . Fendalton I. were without the services of J. 11- Crawshaw, but offered strong opposition to the competition leaders, tlieir players in three out or the six matches taking the first set m each case. J. G. A'Court played some good tennis against H. A. Barnett, but in trying to break through that player's steady defence, generally into errors. W. S. Somerville brought off some surprising half-volleys, and a number of aced forehand returns o service to take the first set from A. v * Cant, but the 'Varsity player won the second and third sets' comiortab y. Winning both his singles and doubles matches, H. S. P. Andrews fourth player for College, maintained his markably good record of going through the competition without a loss to date. W. R. Robinson invariably produces his best tennis. against the best players, and he played--'so well against An gas as to make the New Zealand champion use his full range of strokes. Consequently it was an interesting game for the spectators. It. H. , and W. Goss. jun., played well to take a set from B. E. Souter and J. w. Arnold, respectively. . ■" B. B. Loughnan's defeat or l. "• Patterson in the Fendalton I. match was surprising, as apart from the fact that some ten or eleven places separate them on the Canterbury - ins; list, Loughnan's performances this season have not been impressive ile played ari excellently varied game, and made few mistakes from the net - J ; a ," terson saved nearly a .dozen match points in the second set before 'os'"" the match. The second Wilding Shield player to lose during the afternoon was D F Glanville, who went down to a. G. Searle in three sets. Scarle sorved fast throughout, and many of his forehand drives were unreturnable. Competition points with only two more rounds to be played, are as fol-
