OBITUARY.
MAJOR-GENERAL E. T. WALLACK. (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.' NELSON, February 13. The death has occurred of MajorGeneral Ernest Townshend Wallaclc, aged seventy-five. He Itad been living in retirement in Nelson for some years. Major-General Wallack was born on August 9th, 1857, being the second son of Captain H. J. Wallack. He was educated privately and began a distinguished military career by joining the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. He served on the staffs of LieutenantGendral Sir F. Carrir.gton, LieutcnantGeneral Lord Methucn, and Major-Gen-eral Lord Erroll in the South African War. General Wallack acted in various capacities with the Permanent Staff in Australia, and became a member of tho Australian Military Board. He was appointed Commandant of the Third Military District in 1911 and 1912, and to the Second Military District in 1912. From 1915 to 1917 he occupied an executive position in tho Transport Service, and did special service in Egypt. He was mentioned in dispatches, and the C.M.G. was conferred on him, as well as the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

The death is reported of Mr William Knight Smith, the famous toastmastcr. GEORGE GIBBONS HEARNE. (Received February lijth, 12.48 a.m.) LONDON, February 14. The death is reported, from bronchial trouble, of George Gibbons Hearne, tho Kent County cricketer. He was 76 years of age.
