Garden Party. A Hii'-i'i.'s.st'ul garden party in aid of the parish funds of St. Paul's was held in the Vicarage grounds <.lll Saturday. There was a large attendance of parishioners, and nearly ii-lO was raised. Jll the evening an excellent open-air concert was arranged by Mr B. Tonikie.s, and folk dancing items by the choir were greatly enjoyed. A tennis tournament, by St. Paul's Tenuis Club, organised by .Mr R. Cartner, wilt' also held in aid of the funds, but owing to the large entry, the competition could not be completed. The finals will be played off this afternoon. Those eligible are: 30. Mawson 5 points. K. Cartner 5, W. Bayues 4J, and 11. lladler 4li. The stall-holders were as follows: — NVork, Miss 1-1 ey wood ; cakes, Mrs Tod and Miss Curl; sweets, Mrs Garrett, and Senior Girls' Bible Class; produce, (St. Silas's people under Mrs Allington; odds anil ends, Airs Murray; tea, Mrs Mouerieff, Mrs Tolllki.es, and helpers; ''high tea," Mrs Brown and helpers; sideshows, Boys' Bible Classes under Mr Fisher; competitions, Mr Murray. Temperance Union. A meeting of the Pupuuui branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held :it the , Presbyterian Bible Class rooms on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Graham presided over a .good attendance. Airs Graham, in her opening remarks, urged those present to start the new vear's activities with renewed enthusiasm in the work for the welfare of everyone. Owing to lack of funds, it. was decided not to send a delegate to the Dominion Conference) at Wanganui in March. An interesting reading on the life ol' Frances Willard was given by Mrs F. J. Carr. 3t was decided to make the next meeting a "bring'and buy" afternoon. Tennis. A tennis match took place on St. Paul's courts at; the beginning of tho week. McMillen, who recently rejoined the club, and was placed first on the ladder, was challenged for his place by J. Neeve. Neeve played with great confidence in the early stages and was leading 8-2. On Mc.Millen winning his third game, Neeve lost conlidcnco and misjudged many shots. McMillen commenced his usual game, smashing at the net, completely overpowering his opponent and winning by IJ-8. Last Saturday, the Papanui Club team became the winners of the section in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's competition, defeating the other leading team at'ter a close finish by two games. The team is practically ; he same as last year, with the exception of Prank Smith, who is now playing for Waimairi. Last year the teaui also reached the section final, but were defeated in the play-oft".
