BATHING SHEDS AT SUMNER.

NEW BUILDING SUGGESTED. LIFE-SAVING CLUB'S SCHEME. The plans of a suggested bathing shed for Sumner, with a concrete floor, lookers, and a special roof for sunbathing, were submitted to a meeting of the committee of the Sumner Surf and Life-Saving Club last evening. Mr S. K. Bassett presided. It wa* decided to discuss the suggestion with the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson). Mr j. M. Mitchell, the vice-captaiu, submitted a plan of a suggested building. He said that the Borough Council had more or less guaranteed that there vrould be no opposition. He considered that if a proi>osition -were put before it the Council would guarantee that 110 other licenses would bo issued for ten years. His plan provided for a building in the rear of the present pavilion with a shop facing Scarborough. There would be 60 lockers in each section of the building, and all the necessary conveniences would be provided, including a roof for sun-bathing. A concrete floor would be constructed to facilitate hosing and cleaning. Either a manager could be placed iu charge or tenders could be called. He suggested that surf boards, towels, and costumes could be hired. The beach was becoming more popular each year, and it was up to the club to build a bathing shed before a private individual made similar arrangements. Mr L. Sutherland: I am to altering or adding to the existing building. The club can survive .on the subscriptions without going in? for a scheme such as this. It seems that we are getting away from the objects of the club. Mr S. K. Bassett: The more we can concentrate people in the middle of the beach the easier will it be to patrol. Mr C. H. McPhail moved that a subcommittee, consisting of Messrs S. K. Bassett, J. M. Mitehell, W. S. Burford, and. L. Sutherland, wait on the Mayor to discuss the scheme, arrange the necessary finance, and to report to a later meeting. The motion was seconded by Mr I* Sutherland and carried unanimously.
