COST OF LIVING IN LYTTELTON.
io I'VE roi'ioß op tb» rjtiss Sir, —It was with great interest that I read in tliU morning's Press that Mr \V. G. Carson had drawn the atten tion of those present at a public meet ing held in Lyttelton last evening to the high price charged for bread in Lyttelton, in comparison to the prico in Christchurch. Tt is a pity that he did not also draw attention to the extortionate prices charged for rent for some of the old "shacks" that are called houses in Lyttelton. It is a well-known fact that speculators buy old houses at u very low price, put a coat of paint or them and do a few small absolutely necessary repairs, and then let theni at rents that, after allowing for rates, insurance, etc., bring them in a profit of approximately 20 per cent, interest ou their total outlay. I hope that someone else will bring forward further facts about the cost of living in Lyttelton, and that the authorities whose duty it is to do so will take the necessary steps to stop profit ccrin^.—Tours, etc., SHOP IN CHRISTCHURCH.
