CORNWELL CUP.
FOURTH AND FIFTH HEATS. PORIRUA IN THE LEAD. (PKK3S ASSOCIATION TE LEG a AM.) WELLINGTON, February 4. Christchureh won the fourth h&at of the Cormvell Clip, which was sailed this morning. Lyttelton and Paremata, the latter manned by the Porirua boys, both capsized when they practically had the race to themselves. It was the most interesting and exciting race of the series. The weather was fine for the first time. The contest was held over a triangular windward and leeward course in Evans Bay. All of the boats set their spinnakers iu the run to but in their anxiety to hold their advantage both Parematu and Lyttelton got into trouble off Shelly Bay and capsized. With the two crack crews out of the way, Christchureh pulled in their spinnaker and played safe. They crossed the winning line in a strong breezo at 1.40 p.m. Plimmerton and Auckland, who had made up a lot of leeway over the last round, and Otago were next. Paremata look the likely cup winners. The official times were:— hr. min. sec. Christcbiirc-h ... 1 44 11 Plinimorton ... 1 52 39 Aucklnnd ... 1 52 59 Otago ... ... 1 55 17 Wellington ... 1 59 30 Plimmerton won the fifth race held in Evans Bay this afternoon. The race was not so interesting as the morning event as the wind had lessened considerably. Plimmerton drew out early in the race, and once having established a lead maintained it and went on to win by 4min 35sec from Auckland. Porirua and Christchureh retired through having fouled buoys, and Manukau could not continue through a leaking boat. The finishing times were:— li. m. s.
