FARM LANDS.
PRINCIPLE OF DE-RATING. FARMERS REAFFIRM SUPPORT. tPJUSS ASSOCIATION TKLEGSAit.; Wl/LLIN GTON, February 3 _ The executive, of the New Zealand farmers Union to-day reaffirmed its support for the principle of de-rating farm lands and urged th© Government to bring about a reduction in the price of petrol, thus increasing consumption and providing more revenue in tho form of tax for expenditure upon roads. Mr W. J. Poison, M.P. (president), introduced the subject, saying that the de-rating proposal was growing in public favour, and th© sympathy of the Government had been shown by th© reduction of 12,} per cent, on general rates on rural lands last year The country should tell the oil companies that they would not be allowed to corns to trade in New Zealand unless they were satisfied with a rea sonable profit. The following motion was carriedThat this executive urges upon the Government that it should proceed with th© de-rating of farm lands for loading purposes and that it should regulate the prices of petrol by refus ing to allow oil companies to charge extortionate rates for oil, thus en abhng the consumer to benefit bv reduced prices for petrol and the producer by the expenditure on roadinsr of an adequate petrol tax.
