Mrs Gr. L. Swift arrived from. Dunedin yesterday on a visit to friends in iGreymouth. Mr E» Henry, formerly of the Grey CPower Board, now resident in Wellington, is visiting Greymouth. I Miss K. Thompson, dental officer at , , <the Grey Main School, left to-day on j 'holiday to Timaru. Mr and Mrs D. Steel, and Mr Ivor iSteel, left to-day on holiday to; the INorth Island. Mrs L. M- Gudsell (Palmerston iNorth) is visiting her parents, Mr and iMrs J. C. Brown (Westport). . Mr and Mrs B. Munson and Miss.' |Zita Mtinson (Runanga)) left yesterday jon a holiday trip to Christchurch and Nurtfe :Bennison r who. has resigned from the staff of the Grey Hospital,' 'having completed her training, left yesterday for her home in Ashburton. Mr F. H. Campbell, of the Otago Boys' High School, arrived yesterday on a visit to friends in Greymouth. Mr and Mrs H. E. Hodgkinson, of . Kotomanu, left yesterday on a holiday trip to Napier. Otira Tunnel. Freight railed through the Otira tunnel from the West Coast last week totalled 6517 tons, compared with 9905 tons for the corresponding period last year ? and 10,941 tons in 1929. Christmas Cheer. About 150 of the unemployed have applied for Christmas parcels to N the Mayor, Mr J. W. Greenslade, for their families. ' These are to be distributed by the borough motor-vehicle on Thursday, the necessary preparations being in the charge of the Mayoress (Mrs J. W- Greenslade), and her committee. Man Injured. Mr Fred Sara met with an accident whilst returning from his work last Saturday to his home at Black's Point. The handle-bar of his bicycle broke, and he was thrown heavily to the ground. He received medical attention. Ngahere School. - The Ngahere School Committee recently applied .to , the Canterbury Education Board for a special grant of £l2 for the purpose of erecting a fence *>t the rear of the school to prevent stocs from wandering into the grounds and spoiling the garden plots, and to clear the hill behind' the school of blackberry which was becoming a menace to the school building, should it be set alight. A sum of £6 was granted. Swimming Club. The annuai meeting of the Grey Swimming Club took place last evpning, Mr G. Walters presiding. In the course of his remarks, the president stated that the club's activities were at a standstill this season owing to the unfavourable weather being experienced. It Was decided to give Sunday morning ra!ccs a trial with a view to coaching swimmers, the first swims to start immediately after the holidays. An linvitation from the "Westport' Swimming Club to send a team to their; carnival on December 29th wap left in the hands of the committee with power to act. Express Delayed. Owing to damage to the railway line nefcr the Greymouth station, where the, cow-catcher of an engine tore up a portion of the line, the first and second expresses were delayed, the foTmer, which was scheduled to leave at 9 a.m., not leaving till shortly after ten.
