♦ ASHBURTON. UNEMPLOYMENT. At the weekly meeting of the Unemployment Committee held yesterday, there were present: —The Deputy-Mayor (Mr E. Kerr, chairman), Messrs W. Patterson (Town Clerk), C. H. N. Clarkson (Postmaster)) T. Gibson (borough' foreman), A. Prentice (secretary Ashburton Hospital-Board), and G. Kelly (county clerk).,' It was reported that since December 16th, there wero 32 men removed from the unemployment register after 14 days,, and 20 mpn had obtained private employment. For the week ending January 9th, 1932, there would be avail-, able : for work? 60 two-day ; men, 151 three-day men; and 83 four-day men. The total amount required for full-time relief was £544.12s Id. : ; - - It was decided to make the allocation the same as in previous weeks. Three applications for unemployed relief work were received, two being granted and the other being held over for four weeks. Two applications for men for~farm work were received and granted. The Commissioner of Unemployment (Mr Malcolm Fraser) advised that tlie; Board had decided that after January Ist, it would be a condition that in order to- obtain relief, workors were required to show that they were endeavouring to help fhomselves by cultivating their garden plots for growing vegetables. The Board desired the help of local committees to see that those in receipt of relief and who were in a position to help themselves, were doing so. Where workers had no land available, local bodies were asked to j make arrangements for public or. private sections to be usod for the purpose, the men to cultivate their gardens during their off days. Batts and Mrs Batts left yesterday to spend a month's holiday in Auckland. The Rev. C. v S. Matthews, of, Palmerston North, and formerly of Ashburton, who arrives here on holiday next week, will conduct the services at the Baptist Church for the succeeding three weeks. , , Pilot Officer J.'S.' Eraser visited Ashburton yesterday to make arrangements' for a parachute, jump from an aeroplane' at the 'Aqhburton Aerodrome, towards the end of the week. ' Acclimatisation Society. The monthly meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held .on Monday evening, when Mr T. G. A. Hfirle pre- ■ sided. . i. The chairman reported that since the last' meeting 10,000 rainbow fry had been liberated in Lake Camp, and 15,000 had been placed in the holding pond in the Domain, also' that about 4000 one. two, and three-year-old fish, as well as 27,000 fry, had been transferred from the Hinds river to the Ashburtan; river. ! A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs asking for I the Society's recommendation in con-1 nexion with next game season. It was resolved to make application for an open season from May Ist to July 31st for grey duck, black swan, Paradise duck, and pukeko, under the 1 same conditions as last year. . It was resolved to point out to the Minister the desirability for -having an open season for pukeko on account of numerous applications which had been received from farmers during, the last twelve months for permission to destroy them. Considerable damage to crops had been reported. Foresters' Lodge. The District Chief Banger, officers of the District Executive, and representatives of the Court Thistle of the Forest, Star of Belfast, Victoria, Papanui, ,Woodfordj Pride of Gourtenay, Star of

Greendale, and Enterprise were present ,at tho quarterly meeting of the Court Ashburton, Ancient Order of Foresters, on Monday evening. The C.R. (Bro. C. J. Bax) presided and .welcomed the visitors. Five brothers were reported on the sick funds. Seasonal greetings were received from Canterbury and Ota go United Districts and Court Woodford, Kaiapoi. The following officers were, elected:—C.R., Bro. D. W. Wilson; S.C.R., Bro. D. G. Smith; S.W., Bro. L. Gibson; J.W., Bro. L. J. Strange; 5.8., Bro. E. Reynolds; J. 8., Bro. P. Thompson; co-auditor, Bro. J. McElhinney; marshal to installing officer, Bro. J. Ward. Five candidates were initiated by the, C.R., assisted by the- P.C.R: It was decided that the Management Committee approach the Ashburton Hospital Board in an en- ; deavour to arrange a scheme for the ; treatment of Court members at the , Waipiata Sanat ium. Bro. H. F. Rodgers was' presented with a C.R.'s ribbon in recognition, of his past' ser- ' vices. v ' The congratulated the Court on the manner in which the ceremony! had been conducted and gave an address, on the aims and objects of the Lodge, mentioning the formation recently of a.S.C.R.'s Court. Other members. of District. Executive also: spoke. Special mention was made of Bro. Crowther's services in connexion with the Juvenile Court. ' The D.S.C.R. (Bro. Seay) spoke on. the advantages' of affiliation with the United Friendly Societies' Benevolent Association. The matter was held over. ■■■■;• , The D.C.fi. presented Bro. .fackman with a. gold medal for proposing the most candidates during the past twelve months. The D.C.R. and officers thanked the Court for the welcome and congratulated them upon their enthusiasm in the work of the Lodge. Druids' Lodge. The. fortnightly- meeting of the Star j of Ashburton Lodger-No. 14, U.A.0.D., was held on Monday evening, Bro. T. H. ' Pennall, A.D., presiding over a large i attendance. The A.D. Bards reported | on their visits to sick members, and ■ sick pay was passed to those on the funds. Motions of sympathy were passed to Bros. G. Bowman in the loss of his brother and to Bro. B. Parkin, P.A., had been elected district ; president for No. 8 district for the en- , suing term. Bro. Parkin was congratulated on his election. Sister Cjum, D.P., i announced that the installation would take place on February 15th. A .P.A. i jewel was presented to Bro. C. Solway i by the D.P., on behalf of the members ; of the Lodge. Bro. Solway thanked the ■ members for their gift and assured , them that he would continue to take an , active interest in the Lodge. A gold badge was presented to V.A. Bro. ; J. , Garriock as the winner of the ritual competition for men instituted by the ■ Royal Arch Chapter. Bro. P. Perham i reported on the .visit to the Lily of ' Temuka Lodge on December 14th.
