The fat sheep sale—a large entry—was a steady one, with freezing worKs buyers operating freely. Ewes were slightly easier in price, and wethers were down by Is a head. The fat cattle entry of 215 was one of the smallest of the year, and over a brisk sale there was a general advance or £1 a head. An average sized entry of store sheep was forward. STORE SHEEP. Tlie entry of fat sheep totalled 6100 head, compared with 5100 last week. Ewes again made up the bulk of the offering. There were many fine drafts penned, thp general quality of the offering, despite th» number of lightly-finished sheep penned, being quite good. The sale throughout was a fairly steady one, though on a slightly lowebasis of values, the easing varying from 6d to Is a head. The ewes sold well. ThJ freezing buyers took a fair number of sheep of suitable weights. The top price for wethers was 22s Id, secured for four sold on account of J. Dowd (Sefton). Tho entry of 215 head was one of . the t smallest of 1931, and was in marked contrast to that of 626 head at the preceding market. The lines were all of local Origin, and the quality of a high and uniform standard. As far as prices wore concerned there was quite en advance on those ruling at the previous market, but the shortness of the antry for a double market was the cause of this. In individual cases of steers the rise was £1 10s a head, but on an average over tho whole sale was £1 a head. Over the'last race there was extremely keen competition when butchers who had not secured theu requirements bid briskly for handy-weight steer beef offering, mid 27s and 28s per 1001b was secured in some cases. The top X*ric« for steers was £l2 17s 6d, secured for a 1 verv large Hereford sold on account of a South Canterbury client. The largest line wae that of 23 steers which brought from £B' -i Bd to £l2 2s 6d. The most uniform line was that of six steers sold oh account of T, Brankin (Little River), at £ll 17s 6d. They were splendidly finished Shorthorns. The best price for heifers was £9 12s 6d, while the top price for cows was £9 7s 6d secures for one sold on account of G.
