GOLD CHALICE FOR ST. MICHAEL'S.

In r : October of -last year,- before^tise days of financial'• depression,-; the Vicar : -j -of St.: Michael 's appealed .to the rpublic for gold and jewels J to be worked-up .into'a chalice. The "• responses/was expectedly . generous. - Qldresidente of -Canterbury, .who, in; days past, Worshipped, in the pioneer church of: the*' Canterbury, plains, ias well ; as, members of the' present, congregation, ): sent ,ia- a -curiously ' varied collection of triakets. There "were old-fashioned -tarooehw, bracelets, rings, chains, watches, **arriiigs, as well as some of more modern design,- connected with some touching associations, but- they were willingly given for a religious purpose. Mr F. G. Gurnsey, in conjunction with Mr W. F. Bridgeman,: has made : of 'them a chalice which is believed to be the first golden chalice made in New Zealand. There is: sixty pounds worth of gold in it, the base is adorned by garnets and the knob .by "carbuncles > and turquoise-matrix.. It is of fuUrsize and of attractive, traditional design. The parishioners of St. Michael's. are grateful to one of their, number wtyois defraying the cost'of making the chalice which will be one*of the most beautiful of the many * treasures: of the. Church. .The chalice will be-blessed : and used on Christmas morning* >
