FIRE IN CHINESE STEAMER.
* HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. HALF OF GOO PASSENGERS MISSING. (UKITEP rRESfI ASSOCIATION—I?Y ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) SHANGHAI. December 14. Approximately 250 Chinese passengers of the Chinese inter-island steamer Ta Chie are believed to have perished earlv yesterday, following an outbreak of fire GO miles from Shanghai, according to accounts brought here by survivors rescued by fishing junks. The company official* dispute "the passengers' estimate of the deaths, but the vessel was carrying GOO, and half are still missing. Eight of tho survivors have already succumbed from cxposuro and immersion, iu the icy waters. l'anic followed tho lire, the cause cjf which is unknown. The vessel was beached, but hundreds had already jumped into the water to escape the (lames. The ship was destroyed. Tho same company's previous vessel, 'la Chic, was lost in similar circumstances last March, when 600 lost their lives
