Biccarton Training Notes. There was a fair amount of interesting -work at Eiccarton yesterday, mostly confined to tho plough. The No. 6 grass was again open, but only a few trainers made use of it. Reverse Way. Spoon was dispatched from the winning post and ran a mile on the grass in lmin 46 l-ssec, the last half in 53 see. She is to leave for tho north in charge of her owner to-morrow. Jaioux and Azalea each worked on the plough, both being restricted to two rounds at half pace. Delice was not galloped as it is intended to give her barrier practice to-day. On tbe Plough. v Winsome Hind ran the first three of six furlongs in 37 3-ssec, and completed the journey in lmin 17 3-ssec. * Her sisx ter, Fleeting Glance, ran half a mile in olsec, the last three furlongs in 38see. Riri and Meprisant were together throughout a seven furlongs task which took lmin 31see. Dunraven, receiving a big concession in weight, was going better than Shatter over the -concluding stages of sis furlotfge in lmin 15 2-ssec, the last three in 39aec. Juniper covered the same ground in lmin 17 2-ssec. -This trio should do good service for F. D. Jones during the Auckland gathering. The § rat-named will contest, the Queen.'* late on the opening day, and will be ridden by T. Green. Moorbird, who is being kept' going in view of racing again in the autumn, ran six furlongs in lmin 18see, and Babel did a-similar task in lmin 17- 2-5 set*. ; . Cricket Bat and Zeebrugge finished together" after recording jlmin 15 3-ssec for six furlongs, the last three in 38sec. Both -should pay their way on their . northern trip. Pixie Gold and Don Jose strode over six furlongs comfortably in lmin 19sec. Lockfley, joined by Chief Light at six furlongs, "recorded lmin 3lßee for •even furlongs, 1 the last three in 40 2-ssec. Gigglcswick had a slight advantage from Charmeuso at the end Of seven furlongs run in lmin 30 1-Ssec, the laßt three in 38 1-ysec. Tho former should do well at the West, Coast Meetings. High Tor and Knocklong reeled off five furlongs in lmin 3 2-stfec, finishing together. Royal Amphora and ArrowmSid ran half a milOjin 50 2-ssec, the last thrco furlongs in 37 2-ssee. Hunting Call and Iccni ran half a mile in 51 l-saec, and similar tasks were performed by Rational IT. and Static in 50 8-sse<.\ Homecoming and Tautbow in 52sec, Balrazie, Ma' Belle Polly, and Night Flyer in 52sec, and Sleipner in 52sec. Taku Tama, joined by Monastic at the three furlongs post covered six furlongs in lmin 16 2-sscc. • Other gallops over the distance were done by Countermarch in lmin 18 2-ssec, and Semper Paratus and Starshooter its lmin 19scc. On the Grass. Solwit comfortably beat Gasrange <n-er five furlongs in lmin 2 3-ssec, and Kakara and Mnff ran the same distance in lmin 3 l-ssec., Muff; by Arrowsmith from Contempt, has not had a race sinco

Easter, and is to accompany her stablemates, Riri, Meprisant, and Kokara, on the southern trip. Red Heckle, with Convoy as a mate for six furlongs', did a useful working gallop over a mile taking lmin 46 2-ssec. Grecian Prince sprinted half a mile home in 52 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38sec. Minerval and Elude finished abreast after covering six furlongs in lmin 16 2-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Ramo finished in front of Royal Love at the conclusion of a useful mile gallop in lmin 45 l-ssec, the last half in Blsec. Tho two-year-olds, Silver Ring and Hilary, left half a mile behind in 49sec, and Ranelagh got through a like task in 50sec. Lochlaggan was restricted to a sprint over three furlongs, taking 37 2-ssec, and Oratorious finished a similar task in 36 4-ssec. Marton Cup. Nominations for the Marton Cup, of 200 sovs, one mile and a quarter, t& be decided on January Ist, have been received as follows:—Adelphi, Desert Song, Ephialtes, Arikira, Ruanui, Acmil, Nightmare, Imateagirl, Panther, Balloon, Esteem, Statuary, Billion, Briar Root, Paratoo, King Colossus, Merry Damon, Habit, Grand Jury. Silvermine's Proßpects. Silvermine is getting on in years, and may not now be quite so brilliant as of yore. Inability to begin quickly may prove a severe handicap in a race like the Railway Handicap to be decided at Ellerslio on Boxing Day. At S-4 Silverpine is very nicely handi- ■ capped, and if one could rely on his reproducing his brilliance of former days then his chance in the big sprint event would be second to none. Sydney Elders. At.the conclusion of tho first week's racing this month in Sydney, E. Bartle was at the head of winning jockeys for the Sydney area with 22$ wins, W. H. Cook and M. McCarten being next with 18 and 17 respectively. J. E. Pike had 15$ wins, and W. B. Johnstone and T. Webster 12$ each. The last-named had ridden 15 second and 12 third placegetters for the season to date, and was unplaced on .33 occasions. Back to Melbourne. The New Zealand trainer, A. D. Webster, who has already made a successful trip to* Melbourne® on his present sojourn in Australia, contemplates gping south again, early next year. In all probability he will remain there until after tho Victorian Autumn Meetings. Unusual. It comes Tather as a surprise to hear of an Australian and New Zealand time record being put up at such an out-of-the-way place as Boolaroo, N.S.W. This claim is, however, made for the four-year-old mare In Vain (Orby's Pride —Smash) when, carrying 6-12 in the Maiden Handicap at that Meeting, ! she got to the end of four and a half j furlongs in 54sec. I A Pony Winner. A winner among the' pony ranks at the Kensington (Sydney) Meeting recently was Battle Maid, who accounted for the 3?ourteen-two Handicap, one mile> for which ' she started / second favourite., Battle Maid is a six-year-old mare, bred in Australia,-by Nassau —Light 4 Action. She was bought as a two-year-old by the Southland sportsman, _Mr T. Baird, and won a minor event .or two for him round about his own neighbourhood before being sold back to Australia towards the end of last season. Curtailment of Stakes. With a sharp curtailment -in prizemoney; both in Australia and New Zealand, it would eeeni quite safe to offer the prediction that .existing records under Beveral "headings are likely to stand for some time to come, especially the £26,794 woii by Phafc Lap when three years old. As announced some time ago, the added money 'of the Australian Jockey CluVs Derby has been reduced from- £BOOO to £SOOO, and, with other stakes affected, a three-year-old would require to contest many more, than the 20 races thai formed Phnr Lap's record at the stage named to win anything approaching the same sum. In the season of 1927-28 Trivalve at three years old won £26,320, and in the following season Strephon's winnings amounted to £17,898. TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Nominations for the Rcefton T.C.'s Meeting close to-morrow, at 9 p.m. Against Time. Arrangements have been made between the committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club and Miss E. Hinds, for Harold Logan to appear at the Club's February Meeting in a trial against time. Will have Friends. 1 Mountain Mist, starting for the first time against high-class trotters, went a "very fine race into third place behind Olive Nelson and Boneta, on the second day of the Cup Meeting, and with a little luck he might have finished closer. As regards the Canterbury horses in the Eowe Cup, to be decided at Auckland, they are" practically the same that he beat. at Addington, and with the improvement natural since then he will hot be the least fancied of the visiting horses in that race. Good Nominations Received. The Greymouth Trotting Club has received excellent nominations for its Meoting to be held in January. The majority of tho horses entered hail from Canterbury. In Tom. Auto Machine and Benefice were responsible for one of the fastest workouts ever witnessed on the clay track at Epsom last Saturday morning. Benoflije v recorded 3min 17sec for one mile and a half, the last four furlongs being covered in lmin 3 3-ssec. Auto Machine left two miles behind in 4min 29 4-ssec. Australians at Greymouth. Donna Gulvallis, "Wilbur White, and j Huon Voyage, three of I*\ B. McFai ■ lane's team, at present in Auckland, have been nominated for the Greymouth ; Meeting.

Pair Success. The Greymouth Trotting Club's action in providing a race for the best class trotters has met with very fair success, a nomination- of twelve being received. Included is Olive Kelson, who, in November, at Addington recorded such a remarkable performance in winning three events. Another notable entry is that of the Australian trotter, Huon Voyage. Working Well. Gold Country showed himself to be in good form for approaching Meetings by the way he covered a mile and a quarter, in company with Harvest Child, at Addington yesterday morning. Back to Trotting Gait. White Satin, who about three months ago was converted from a trotter to a~ pacer, has been reverted to the trotting gait. She was given strong trotting work yesterday morning at Addingtou. and by the way she moved the racing she had as a pacer has not had any ill effects in her style of trotting. First Since Forbury. Delightful was yesterday given his first piece of serious work since he fell at the recent Forbury Meeting. He did his work in a confident manner and he does not show any ill-effects from the occurrence. Handles Track Well. Although Marvin Guy is not a horse of small proportions he handles the small Greymouth track quite well. His next: racing is likely to be done on the same track. DANNEVIRKE R.C. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.
