LIFE-SAYING.

CANTERBUPY CENTRE. AWARDS APPROVED, At the monthly meeting of Ihe Canterbury Centre of the RoyaJ Life-Saving Socioty last evening, Mr If. E. Lyons presided. A large number of awards were approved, the totals for the season being:—Award of merit? 9, bar to award of merit 4, hon. instructors 12, teachers 2, bronze medallion 74, bar to medallion 29, proficiency 63, elementary 8, breaststroke 21. The New Zealand Council of the Socioty advised that Air P. C. Bamford had giveu a shield to bo awarded to tho school, college, or club in New Zealand gaining tho greatest number of awards irrespective of roll number or what tho awards are, elementary certificates counting one point, and a bronze medallion or award of merit two points. It was decided to send forward the name of the Technical College with 94 points. On the motion of Mr Breward it was decided that in future the free issue of award of merit badges, in addition to the medallion, to winners of the award, should be discontinued on the grounds of the high cost of providing theso badges. The committee dealing with the street appeal reported that £l3l 18s had bien received and the expenses had been £4 16s. The sum of £63 lis had been given to the Sumner Lifeboat Association, and an equal sum remained for the isurf clubs. The chairman Isaid that it was a matter for congratulation that the appeal had been successful, and that tho expenses were so low. Benson presided over a meeting of the Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association held last evening in the Y.M.C.A. " A letter was received from the Canterbury head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society enclosing a circular stating that an inyitation h»d been received from the New South Waleß Surf Life-Saving Association for a New Zealand surf team, to be sent to Sydney on the occasion of the opening of . the harbour bridge.

The New Zealand Council of the Royal LifeSaving Society had considered thp matter and had favoured the idea; finance, however, was the stumbling block. Mr Benson said that the time was most inappropriate and that the Association could not be expected to help at its own elcpense. It was decided to turn the offer down officially, but to notify each club that it could act if it so desired. A letter from the patron of tho Association, Mr F. D. Kesteveu, enclosed a donation of £2 2s to tho Association's funds. The donation was received with thanks. Permission was granted the Sumner Club to send a demonstration team to Dunedin, budject to the Association's approval of team and manager. ' Beach Patrols. Beach patrol-men for the coming season on local beaches were approved as follows :• — Sumner —L. Sutherland. North Beach —Allan Dalton, , New Brighton—H. Smith (half period), N. Smith (quarter period), E. McCflnvillo (quarter period). ■■ . • The appointment of the New Brighton patrol-men conformed -with the Association's decision to ration work if such a course was practicable. The patrols will commence next Monday, Deeomber 21st.
