BOROUGH COUNCILS

NEW BRIGHTON. A meeting of the New Brighton Borough. Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Atr E. A. M. .Leaver), Cra. J. S. Ainsworth, A. E. Lawry, S. J. Bi Bargl'ove, W. S. Bus&ell, T. E. Thomson, R. E. Holloway, E. A. Robinson, W. Hulme, and W. Wilkins. The South New Brighton Progress League wrote drawing attention to the erosion which was taking place at Pleasant Point domain, and asking that Stepei be taken to prevent such from becoming serious. The letter stated that the existing stone wall was ih a. l>ad state of repair. It was decided to refer the matter to the Standing Committee and ask the chairman of Works to report to that oommittea The Christchurch City Treasurer forwarded A cheque Sot* £5, being a further contribution from the Mayor's Belief of Distress jTund to the New Brighton Relief Depot. The Department of Health forwarded circulars relative to health stamps for health campa. The circulars explained the origin of the idea, gave a brief account of the Health C'amjj lriovemfcrit, and gave suggestions for publicity. It wis agreed tt> accept the invitation of tho Mayoress (Miss I. Leaver) to a benefit concert, to be held in the Premier Theatre 6/1 December 10th. In connexion with the matter of conveniences at tho South Brighton Surf Club, it Was decided that Cra. Wilkins and Hobinr Son be given authority to go ahead with the matter and spend up to £lO in tho proVision of temporary conveniences. Tho question of the erection of tents on Vacant properties was raited by Cr. Ainsworthj who thought that every facility should be offered outsiders to pitch tents on vacant sections. Aftar a discussion, a motion to the effect lhat every facility be accorded visitors to pitch tents on vacant sections provided the by-lftws were complied with, was catHfed. Cr. Wilkins was appointed to the vacancy on the Band Conimittee. On the motion, of Cr. Bus Sell, a Vote of thanks was accorded Cr. Ainitodrth for His efforts in the direction of having Trivia road, Rookwood avenue, and Bowftill road declared Secondary highway®. The Mayor reported that Mr Gladstone Hill, had offered to give ah illustrated lantern lecture of his trip rouhd the world, tho proceeds to be handed to the Mayor for the relief of distress. It Was decided "to accept tho offer with thanks and grant tho rtccssary permission. Finance Oommitteo. The report of the Finance and By-lawS Committee (adopted) Contained a letter from the. North Canterbury Hospital Board intinifctihg teat in consequence of alterations in buildings it was necessary to increase the amount of the loan of £78,400 for various purposes by £2705, and application was being made to the Looal Laima Board for authority to borrow this extra sum of money.— Rffceivcd. The New Brighton. Single Unemployed Committed wrote asking the Council to recognise the committed as the representatives of the single unemployed in the borough.— Received. It was agreed to recommend that the Christchurch Rotary Club be granted permission to make a street collection on Deccihber 18th, in aid of providing Christmas hatnpers for the poor in. Correspondence from the South New Brighton Tennis Club stated that if the CoUncil would Contribute £6, the ciub would undertake to have the work of sinking a well in Jellicoe street reserve carried out. Cr. Lawry reported that the sub-committee had enquired into the matter and feconimended that the Council, contribute £G towards the cost of the well provided a 2in well be put down. It wan agreed to recommend that th 6 report be adopted. The Public Works Department wrote insisting upon the payment Of £5 68 5d for hiire of shovels for the unemployed in Rawfciti Domain. It was agreed to recom-; mend that ths taatter bn left in the hands of the Town Clerk. Mr H. F. VoogOod wioU explaining the position regarding the cost Of raising the tram-tracks at the bridge. The Town Clevk reported upon the position, stating that the n.fitter was in band. The New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club wrote applying for a 1 eduction in the charge for use of the sports ground in the Domain. 11. was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Rawhiti Domain Board that under existing circumstances the charge be reduced to £2 10s for the current year. It was resolved to recommend that the application of R. Cole for a renewal of the permit to conduct his merry-go-round on the foreshore at £lO, be granted. Accounts drawn on the following funds vfere recommended for payment:—District Fund account, £96S 16s lid; Rawhiti Domain Board, £l7 6B 3d. Works Report.
