V E Armstrong moved: "Owing to the extreme distress •unong working classes in the City, .is the Result of unemployment and part-time employment, the Council recognises that it is its duty to employ as many men as possible to _ leave distress. The Council therefore decides to establish a maximum sala.v of £SOO per annum for all office! s in its employ, the savings thereby to be spent in the employment ol additional permanent men. In doing so, Cr. Armstrong said that any remarks he might make regarding rhe motion would be quite mipersona . Proceeding, he stated that he had pledged himself to do what he could on the Council to provide work for as irany people as possible. Tt was high time that the Council compared the salaries it paid with those paid by business firms. In some cases salaries had been increased by as much as 100 per cent, in ten years, whereas the wages of general labourers had not been increased by a penny. If his scheme ver© adopted, eleven officials would bo concerned, the amount involved being •£2550. The scheme would provide permanent work for eleven men at £4 10s per week. Money had been squandered in the past and he considered it wrong that an official in receipt of a big salary should be allowed to. go abroad at the expense of the Council, while his salary was being drawn. The Mayor (after a pause): Is there any seconder of the motion ? No councillor responded, and the motion accordingly lapsed.
