ROYAL GARDEN PARTY. The garden party held on Saturday afternoon in the lovely garden of Mr YV. M. VizSr's homo in Manchester street north was a judicious mixture of the novel and the ordinary, which mado it a complete success. Organised by Mrs E. B. Chambers in aid of the Edgeware Road Methodist Church funds, it opened spectacularly with an 18th Century royal procession, which, heralded by a rousing fanfare of trumpets, wound its way in solemn state through the grounds. Wearing costumes true to the Georgian period, all of which had been mado by Mrs Chambers, King George 11. and his Queen, with full retinue of attendants, arrived on the lawn, where they were welcomed by "John Wesley" and conducted to seats of honour. Those taking part in the procession were as follows:—King and Queen, Master Ashleigh Petch and Miss Doreen Cameron; Ladies in Waiting, Helen Tait and Ngaire Ford; 'pages, Joan Hegatty and Valda Williams; Beefeaters, Masters Len Chambers and Douglas Ayres; Herald, Bruce Caygill; Bearer of Scroll, Wesley Chambers; King's Equerry, Leon Johnson; John Wesley, Mr Norman Quereo. Other ladies in costumes of the 18th Century were Mesdames E. Horsley. E. Ablutt, E. It. Cay gill, C. Holsey, G. Williams, R. Hill, Archer, Cuddy, C. Dyer, E. Cameron, and E. B. Chambers, and Misses J. Collier and S. Osborne. The many entertainments included folk dancing by Biblo Class girls, trained by Miss M. Read, Maypole dancing Ijy Sunday School scholars, directed by Mrs G. Williams and Miss D. Rnpley, and competitions under the direction of Messrs 10. Horsley, J. Emmett, LI. Fraser, E. Bailey, and E. Billcliff. The following were in charge of the stalls, wlic-.re brisk business was transacted : Sewing, Mesdames F. Lucas, J. Baker, and E. Ablett; fancy goods, Mesdames G. Robson and Hill and Miss S. Thompson; cakes, Mesdames Cuddy, Duff, G. Lucas, and Collier; home industries, Mesdames Fraser and Megson; sweets, Misses K. Dennis and M. Read ; afternoon tea, Miss F. Cnygill and Mesdames E. R. Caygiil, Archer, C. Dyer, and C. Holsey. During the afternoon the Rev. E, B. Chambers, on behalf of the church, mado the presentation to Miss Daisy Rnpley of an attache case, in recognition of many years' work in connexion with the juvenile choir and training of children for conceits. He also thanked Mr and Mrs Vizer for the use of tlieir grounds. The fete was continued in the evening, when the grounds were effectively illuminated. An enjoyable programme was given by the Valencia Quartet (Misses Lucy Fulhvood and Jean Johnson and Messrs T. C. Rodgexs and E. J. Johnson); Edgeware Road Methodist Church choir in glees and part songs (conductor, Mr C. James), and Mrs E. Cameron and Mr Arthur J. Bell, who sang solos. Miss Stella Qsborne was pianist. The Maypole tlance and tho folk dancing, which had given much pleasure" in the afternoon, were repeated 111 the evening.

SURPRISE PARTY AT HORNBY. A surprise party visited the residence of Mrs W. H. Busch at Walker's road, Hornby. Games and competitions were enjoyed. Competitions were won by Mesdames EL. CANTERBURY WOMEN'S CLUB. GALA NIGHT. The reception room at the Canterbury Women's Club was crowded on Saturday night when a gala night programme, arranged by the Entertainment Committee, proved a great attraction. The guests of honour were Misses Joan and Betty Rayner, the T.O.Y. entertainers, who were cordially welcomed by the president, Mrs J. A. Flesher, who also extended a welcome to new members. A short plav, '"The Legend," written by Philip Johnson, was splendidly acted by Mrs G. D. Ellis, Mrs V. Evans, Mr Jackson Thomas, and Mr Mervyn Bull. The miscellaneous musical programme promoted a fine spirit of friendliness and gaiety amongst the members. A group of members sang a topical song ! composed by Miss Mabel Smith, and many of the guests joined in the singing of Christmas carols and sea chanties.. Solos were sung by Mrs David Bates and Mr Buchanan, and a competition on members' names was won oy Miss Mary Spence. Miss Joan Rayner delighted the audience with an interesting and amusing account of her own and her sister's experiences caravaning in Australia. PARTY AT "TE WHAREKOA." The members of the ■ Shirley Methodist Church were fortunate in having such a beautiful spot as Mr A. K. Hadfield's grounds in which to hold their garden party on Saturday afternoon in aid of the Church Trust Funds. The large garden with its fine trees, its wealth of flowering shrubs, gay flower beds, and wide smooth lawns, bordered by the Dudley Stream, was looking its very best in . the bright sunshine, which turned into tiny rainbows the spray from the three fountains. The Rev. S. BaHcy thanked Mr and Mrs Hadfield for the use of the grounds and briefly introduced Mr R. W. Jiawke, M.P., who was accompanied by Mrs Hawke, and wlio formally opened the party and wished the stallholders success in their undertaking. Spirited music was supplied by the Linwood Salvation Army Band conducted by Bandmaster Clark, an exhibition of folk dancing was given under the direction of Mies N. Ward, and the tennis court was in great demand. The stalls were arranged round the lawn under the trees at the side of the house, pride of place being occupied by the sweets std.ll, which was placed under a rare cretagus tree, and the cake stall, sheltered by a handsome scarlet oak. The following were the stallholders: Afternoon tea stall, Ladies' Guild; book stall, Miss Jessie Palk and Mrs J. Murray; bran tub, senior girls; soft drinks .and sweets, Miss K. Moore and helpers; Christmas gifts, Mesdames Wcstaway, A. W. Emmett, and Turner: work stall, Mesdames J. Palk and P. AV. Sharpe; side shows, Messrs J. Murray and Alan Pashby; character reading, Mrs Stanton. Mr W. I>. Marks acted as secretary of the very successful gatlm-ing.

SUNBEAM KINDERGARTEN. The monthly meeting of the Sunbeam Kindergarten Committee was held in the schoolroom, those present being Mrs J. R. Evans, who presided, Mesdames R. B. Cape-Williamson, J. Redpath, !<• B. Thompson, and H. Mathews, Miss Dawe, Miss H. Otley, and Mrs Carlisle, hon. secretary. .It was reported that the subscriptions for October-November amounted to £4 16s, and for November-December to £4 7s Gel. , . ■ Miss Gorrie's school report showed that the roll number was 57, with an average attendance of: 50. It was decided to hold a Christmas party on December 17th. LEWISHAM GARDEN FETE. The Lewisham garden fete ended successfully on Saturday night after a very enjoyable afternoon and evening session. The organising committee are delighted with the response of the public to the appeal of the • Rev. Mother and Sisters, but the final financial result will not be known for a few days. On Saturday a very large number of country people vi»ited the fete, and others, who were unable to eqme to town, sent valuable contributions' of goods with which to replenish the depleted stocks of the various stalls. _ The side-shows, under the direction of Messrs Harold and Charles Throp and Mr Somerfield, did splendid business, and the "Mock Court of Just-us" in which Major A. B. Williams, Messrs Alan Brown, P. P. J. Amodeo, H. St. A. Murray, J.. McKeefry, Alex. McDonald, Paul Clarkson, and Pat Collins played an important part, was a source of amusement ana revenue, while Mrs Seigrit was kept busy reading' characters. The gate-keepers were Mr D. Haughey and Mr W. J. Hine, and Mrs F. C. Delany and Miss Hilda Nottingham were assisted in their secretarial duties by Mi6S Kathleen Cotter. Mr Ralph Beadel gave much-appreci-ated assistance on Saturday night in the disposing of the surplus stock on tho stalls, WEDDINGS. ANDERSON—FRANCIS. A pretty wedding was celebrated at j St. Stephen's Church, Shirley, when Helen Rowena, eldest •daughter of Mr and Mrs R. T. Francis, Edgeware road, was married to Murdoch, second son of Mr and Mrs A. D. Anderson, Ashburfcon. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a becoming gown of white satin beaute and she carried an armlet of roses and carnations. The bridesmaids, Isobel and Dorothy Francis, sisters of the bride, wore ankle-length frocks of blue and apricot georgette respectively. The best man was Mr Wingate -Lewitt, of Ashbnrton, and the groomsman was Mr D. Anderson. The mother of the bride wore a dress of floral marocain and black tricorne hat. Miss Betty Francis, the younger sister of the bride, wore blue taffeta. When Mr and Mrs Andqjson left by car for their wedding tour, the latter was wearing a wine-red marocain ensemble, a fawn blouse, and hat to tone.

WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION. The annual meeting of the Sydenham branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Colombo Street Baptist Schoolroom on Thursday. Mrs J. K. Archer, vicepresident, was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The reports of the various departments indicated very good work haying been done during the year. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs M. J. Johnson ; rice-presidents, Mrs Lymburn and Mrs J. K. MERIVALE PARISH PETE. St. Mary's parish fete, held annually at Merivale, serves the twofold ! purpose of raising money for the church funds, and providing a very pleasant social gathering, at which the parishioners renew former friendships [ and make new friends. [ On Saturday afternoon the spacious grounds at Mr and Mrs Edwin Hamilton's home on Papanui road were the scene of great activity. Round the lawn, many well-stocked and gaily decked stalls were arranged, ynfl j n a large marquee behind the house, the ladies in charge of the refreshment stall had a busy time serving tea to the many visitors. A gymnastic display was given by Mr Charles Buckett's • pupils, and two keenly contested tennis tournaments were played—one, mixed doubles, on two courts lent by Mr Hamilton, and Mr F.
