f $ SCARBOROUGH PARK. } Few people realise that Scarborough Park, although only a comparatively small area, is definitely attractive in spite of its lack of development. Thanks to the interest of the members of the Beautifying Association, many trees planted in the past year or two are making rapid' progress, while others which have niiraculously escaped destruction fro'm the fires which swept the Park are large enough to offer welcome shade. A path of easy grade has been constructed for some time* and in one or two places it skirts Bmall gullies where seats have been placed so that a maximum of shelter is provided. General. was a decided dip in the heavy fog which covered Sumner and Eedcliffs throughout the day on Thursday. The Estuary and the sea-front at Sumner were completely enveloped, but as the fog worked its way inland it gradually dispersed. From the top of Scarborough, Sumner and Redcliffs were completely enshrouded; but from a lower level it was evident that the fog did not extend a great inland. At this time of the year the majority of Sumner's hill gardens appear attractive. Although the season is a trifle late, there are many varied tints to delight the eye. The owner of one attractive hill garden maintains that they are easier to look after than those on the flat. Tennis. The tennis season is now iii full swing and in the first series of interclub matches the A team was defeated by "Woolston, while the B team won from Te Whaka. The Gala. The net result o£ the gala, which is to be shared equally . between the Lifeboat Institution and the Life-Sav-ing Club, has not-'yet been definitely ascertained, but officials of both clubs are_ quite Satisfied with the response to their arduous labours, which extended over a period of about seven or eight weeks. An official of one of the clubs stated that one of the most pleasing features was the harmonious manner in which the members of the two bodies worked together, and this, he said, would tend to bring tGem in closer touch with one another. The only damage to borough property was trampling of the Beautifying Association's flower plots in the vicinity of the Ferris wheel, but in view of the density of the crowds this was practically unavoidable. A tribute to the good behaviour of the many visitors has already been paid by the Mayor (Mr. W. H. Nicholson) and this view was also held by members of the gala executivo. Volunteer Fire Brigade.
