A BUSY THOROUGHFARE. • * THE streets of a city, even of such a comparatively new city as Christchurch, acquire an individuality, differentiating one from another. Later, when Christchurch had a port on the Heathcote at Woolston, High street was on the direct route to Christchurch quay. There are some to-day who have a vision of a Port Christchurch in the estuary of the Avon and Heathcote rivers, and if that dream comes true High street and Ferry road again will be roadways connecting the City with that great highway of trade and commerce, and of enterprise and adventure—the sea. Another claim that High street has to distinction is that it is the more important of the two City streets that do not conform to the chess-board lay-out.
