ASHBURTON. ' .. .L HON. D. JONES CONGRATULATED. For the past week or so it. has been generally considered by the supporters of the Hon. David Jones in the MidCanterbury electorate, that in the event of a Coalition Ministry be lug formed lie would he one of tlie first selected for elevation to Cabinet rank. When the announcement was made, several of his constituents tolcgraphed congratulations. Congratulations were also -forwarded from the borough and county of Ashburton. , The Mayor (Air W; H. Woods; sent the following:—"Heartiest congratulations, Ashburton residents, your appointment Cabinet rank." . The message from the chairman of tiie County Council (Mr H. C. B. Withell) was as follows: —"Hearty congratulations from residents of Ashburton county on your appointment to such a high office. The appointment of the best men to Cabinet in the difficult times will meet with general approval,, and maintain confidence in the future of the Dominion." Price of Sugar. Although the wholesale price of sugar has been increased by £5 per ton and the increase will take effect on sugar whicj is landed in the South Island on Saturday morning, the Ashburton grocers are not passing on the rise to consumers in the meantime. One ; local •grocer said .yesterday that lie thought it would he probably a week or go before any increase in the' retail price would bo considered. Drunkenness. A statutory first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, by Mr A. 11. Fenn, J.P., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Women's Institute.
The monthly meeting of the Allenton Women's Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs E. de G. Robilliard, president, presided over a large attendance. Seven new members were enrolled. Mesdames Kobilliard and J. R. MeInnes were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Federation at Geraldine on October 20th. An interesting demonstration on making soft toys was given by Mrs Osborne, who exhibited a variety sho had made herself. She was accorded a vote of thanks. A competition for making lainp-sliades was won by Mrs A. Saunders, while another for making. baskets was won by Mrs J. Stevenson. The roll call, "Sing, Say, or Penny Pay," caused much amusement among the members. During the afternoon a number of community songs'were sung. ..The hostesses ..were Mesdames G. ?Cujrie,'W. McLaren, and A. Saunders. Dental Clinic. The monthly meeting of the Ash burton Dental Clinic Committee was held on Wednesday evening, when the chairmany Mr W. S. Work was confined to the borough and Allenton children, and was carried out at the borough subbase.
The annual report of the Division of Dental Hygien6 was received from the Director. The Director also advised that the clinic committee's" application for an additional ifljrse had • received the sanction of the Minister for. Health, and, as suggested by the clinic'committee, another clinic would .. bo established, probably at the Borough School. Tho -Borougli School Committee made appli--'cationk'for the sub-hase at their school to be conducted as a base. The Clinic Committee approved of the suggestion, and would recomihend the inspectjpig dental officer, Mr F. B. Rice, to sanction the proposal.
As the establishment of two clinic 3 would entail additional expenditure, the committee, will have seriously to consider withholding dental treatment-from those children who do not pay the. levy imposed to cover the amQunt" charged to it by the Department in accordance with the latest regulations. ' It was reported that already over SOO children were receiving treatment, and it. would be some time before the facilities of - the clinic could be extended to other schools in the vicinity; but' the .hope was expressed that as soon as the work was brought up to date, the committee would consider incorporating neighbouring schools under the scheme.
Baring Square Tennis Club. The'.Baring Square Methodist Tenuis Club held its annual meeting on Tuesday'evening, when the Rev. G. B. Hinton presided. , The annual report stated that the playing membership for the season was 51. The club was deeply indebted to .Messrs W. L. Morgan and W. H. Higgins for giving cups for the women's and men's handicap singles respectively. The women's, cup was won by Miss Waveney Tinsley, with Miss E. Weston runner-up. That for the men was won by Mr H. Weston, with Mr K. i'owke runner-up! During the season ten.matches were played with various clubs in the country. The thank 3 of the club were due to all who had assisted in any way, especially to Mr C. F. Horrill for his work in connexion with the improvement of the courts. The St. Stephen 's Literary and Social Club met on Tuesday evening, when Mr H. G. Paterson presided. A debate was held between a team from the Catholic Club and'the club. The former team were Messrs W. Bryant (leader), F. Madden, and »G. A. Furby (affirmative), and St. Stephen's was- represented by the Rev. C. W. Ilaskell (leader), Messrs Max Laing and S. M. Cassidy (negative). The subject was "That the introduction of machinery has not been of real benefit to mankind." Mr F: W. Watt was adjudicator, and gave the decision in favour of St. Stephen's by a narrow margin of poiuts. It was decided to hold the final meeting of the club for the season next week, the evening to take the form of a social, to which members of the Girls' Friendly Society would be invited to be presert. St. Stephen's Tennis Club. The annual meeting of the St. Stephen's Tenuis Club was held last evening, when the Rev. A. J. Petrie presided. The annual report stated that there had been a slight drop in the membership during the year. However, from a playing viewpoint, it had been quite successful. Several matches with other clubs had been played, and the club had been fairly successful in these. The balance-sheet showed that the substantial debit had been reduced by about £SO, leaving a debit balance of £65 with which to commence this year 'a operations. The meeting authorised the expenditure of about £ls for surfacing the courts and surroundings. RAKAIA. At a social held in St. Mark's schoolroom by the Ladies' Guild there was a good attendance. Competitions were won by Mrs„G. Tatterson and Mr T. Moore. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss F. Cornelius and Mr E. Weaver was M.C, ;•■! METHVE^|_\. .The. ninthly meeting committee gf the' Methveii Public Library was held on Tuesday evening. Mr J. Temple presided. The chairman mentioned that he had received complaints regarding the lack of new books suitable tor men. It was pointed out that very few books of this class had been obtainable latterly, and it was decided to secure as many as possible in the next purchase of books. A number of new volumes were catalogued and placed on the shelves, and it was agreed to purchase a further £5 worth immediately. A meeting of the committee appointed to go into the question of celebrating the jubilee of the Methven District High School, which occurs in February next, was held in the library on Monday evening when there was a full attendance. Mr J. F. Stone was elected to the chair. Representatives of the School Committee were also present.
Mr Stone outlined the progress already made in connexion with the proposed celebrations. Mr W. T. P. Lock, representing the School moved that the celebrations should be held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Mr R. W. Wightman seconded the motion, which was carried.— It was mentioned that the actual date of the jubilee would be February 7th, and a long discussion ensued on the question of the suitability of this date on account of harvest operations being in full swing. Great difficulty was experienced in selecting a suitable date, and it was decided to hold this matter over until a definite decision was arrived at as to what form the celebration would take.
Various suggestions were made as to the'programme celebrations. The question of preliminary finance was then considered and it was decided to hold a dance on a Saturday evening in October for the purpose of raising funds. It was decided that; a sub-committee of nine be appointed to" confer with the School Committee and the following were appointed: Messrs R. Duff, A. F. Marr. P. Ouinn. F. G. Mangin, W. R. Morgan, R. W. -Wightman, J. F. Stone, D. Smith, and Ri Burrows.

Census forms were lin ndied by thousands of enumerators in Britain this year, _ including 12.704 unemployed, 1821 civil servants, 6347 employees of authorities, rind 19.144 other employed or retired persons. One enumerator disappeared ivhile the count was in -nrostre**! —mid his enumeration hook and the schedules he had collected vanished. too.
