SELF-HELP ON THE SUMMIT ROAD.
TO T-PE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. . Sir, —"Wlien the men working under the Number Five Schem6, which was designed to help the workless,, were set to" work to prune the trees growing by the path and roadside through Victoria Park, they were instructed to, save all the larger branches, as it was intended to have theui cut up into small blocks for the men to take away to their homes. Two or three loads were brought down to the Takahe and men were engaged to saw them into firewood blocks. All this wood was carried away in small lots and the men have enquired almost daily for more ot the wood, and were told that so soon as it could be carted down more would be available. All this was made public, but selfish and thoughtless people have considered they had as much right to the wood lying on the roadside as these workless people. A blue car was seen loaded with this wood on two occasions, a lady and gentleman saw a truck one evening standing by the roadside, j tisfc< past the entrance to Victoria Park, at 9 p.m.; a professional gentleman out for a walk saw this truck leaving the locality of Victoria Park* with as much, of this wood as the truck could carryhe said it was piled high up. There were at one time jabout ten cords or this wood, but selective people grabbed all the macrocarpa first, and to-day I could not see more than two or throe cords.—Yours, etc.. 11. G. i'jiili. September loth, 1931.
