Wo have spent a lot of money there, and it is only going down the cows' ' throats." observed a councillor at a meeting of the Masterton County Council, when it was stated that stock in tlie bed of the Waingawa river were responsible for a great deal of damage to tlie willow trees, which form part <■!' tin; river protective works. . *The Council had before it an opinion from its solicitor on the question of impounding stock wandering 111 the river bed. It also had information'concerning the number of stock grazed on the roads by county workmen. _ Cr. H. 11. Muwlcy gave notice of motion to move sic the next meeting that the resolution allowing roadmen to graze three head of stock on the * roads be rescinded. He observed that he did not want to do anything drastic, and thought that in some cases .the Council ecnld make provision, for roadmen who did not have sufficient Jund.
