Town Planning and Housing.' The Town Planning, Housing, and Health Committee reported that an application had been received for permission to soi back a seven-roomed house, situated at No. - 249 • Cambridge terrace,to within 10 feet of the rear of the section, and to construct a 12-roomed building in front thereof, the whole to be used as a boarding-house. As the 'Municipal Corporations Act provided that an - open space of- at least 20 feet, should be provided for the full width of any site containing a building exceeding 15 feet m height, the committee had rofused the request. Mr W. C. Sanders had applied for permission to. erect two sheds, each measuring 13ft. x 33ft—-one in Betreat road, Ayonside, and the other in Matson's road, Papanui—-for the purpose of housing his buses. The' committee had granted the ap- 1 plicatipn' on, the understanding that weatherboards would be used in the construction of the buildings, which must be set."back'to the rear of-the sections. Mr A. W. Palmer had applied for per- i mission to .erect a two-storeyed house and a motor shed on a section in Carlton Mill road. The section was , only 33 feet in -width, and the. builder desired to erect the motor shed near the front of the section, in which case it would overlap the house, The house was, however, to be set back 72 feet from the, road, and the mo*' shed would not in any way interfere - with the light or air-space. Section 8 (4) of By-law No. 15 provided that where a dwelling-house had been erected at a distance from the frontage of a no person, without special leave from the Council, should erect a building of any kind in the space between such dwelling-house and the frontage. As it was impossible in this instance for the motor shed to be erected-else-where, it was recommended that the special permit referred to in the by-law be granted. ' ' The following subdivision of land was) approved:—Henry Berry and Co. Ppty, Ltd., Harper street/City (leasing purposes only). : . The report was adopted. . . Water Supply and XWorks. The -Water Supply and Works Commit-

tee reported" that the Tramway Board commenced its operations on the High street reconstruction work on August 31st. It was the intention of the Board to relay the track on the south-west side first, starting at Hereford street, and going right through to Madras street. To complete the Council's portion of the work in-.good time-it was proposed to start immediately the Tramway Board had the bitumen placed over the full width of its tracks from Hereford street 'to Cashel street, the Council's work to be then started on the north-east side. In connexion with the work it would be necessary to purchase considerable quantities of shingle and sand. Quotations were therefore being obtained, and, as • the matter was urgent, the committee asked that ;the ,chairman be given authority to accept a quotation. The report was adopted.
