BOWLING, TENNIS AND CROQUET.
THE UNITED CLUB. The 27th annual report of the United Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club states that the membership of the club showed a small decrease; nevertheless the roll contains the satisfactory total of, 538 members; . The statement of accounts shows an excess of receipts over expenditure of £G7 3s. The year commenced with a debit balance of £268 19s Id, and onded with a debit balanoe of £2Ol 16s Id. Items of capital expenditure during tho year included payments totalling £92 2s for fences and equipment for the nejv six grass courts. , The grounds showed an improvement during the past season. The use of motor-mowers had enabled the lawns and greens to be cut mort often and efficiently. The particularly favourable weather conditions prevailing throughout the season also, assisted materially to keep the playing areas in good order. The western bowling green was used throughout the season, and gave entire - satisfaction. The new tier of six courts were used throughout the season, and were excellent; the "top" courts, which had to be again resown, should be available for the club championship matches after Christmas. Tho croquet greens were in excellent order throughout tho year. _ In tho tennis section the lawns showed considerable ' wear after Christmas, but not as much as usual. As anticipated in last year's, report, tho first block of courts had to be resown on account of the bad autumn strike, but this had proved a blessing in disguise, lor the result had been excellent. It is anticipated that the championships will be played on them after Christmas. The new six courts laid down near the Biccarton road were played on for all tho season, and fulfilled their promise of being excellent ones. Unfortunately, on account of the expense involved, it will not be possible to take up a block of courts this year, but 14 J? hoped next season to do so. and then a block each season thereafter till all are replenished. _ The croquet season was a most interesting and successful one, and the lawns were in splendid condition. The membership showed a satisfactory increase, and the standard of play was excellent in all grades.
