' > A boy aged 16 admitted driving an . un- ° registered car and fixing the wrong number- . plates to • a : car. ' , '' Sergeant W. T. Kelly said; that the boy. ' had been employed. by ,a motor firm. in. the s city. He, took from the office the. key of a store" where second-hand cars were kept. ■ Later he and another boy had gone| to the store, and taken .out-ati old car, which, was unregistered. They took the number-plates from ..anothe* old car which was registered, . and put; them on the first car and. drove j round the City. ■ They had a collision, after I. .which they returned the car to the stow, ajid put the Dumber-plates back on to the " right car. The next morning, the .insurance • agents' were at the" firm, the whole story ' came out, and the boy was at once dismissed. The' case , had been before the * Court before, and had been adjourned so that the matter of cancellation of the license, could be. investigated. j_ For using an unlicensed car, the boy was fined -ss. " The Magistrate said he had no power to cancel the license for such an offence, but on the-'charge of fixing the xvrong numberplates to aT. car,. the boy would ! be porivicted and ordered; to. come up for sentence within twelve - months if called upon. He would not be' called for sentence if hp refrained from 'driving a motor vehicle of any kind during that period. MISCHIEF. A ; Two -boys, aked 8J and 9£, - weHP charged with breaking 25 panes' of glass in . a win--0 dow, valued .at 25b..' i- " Chief-Detective' J. Carroll said that the y .boys had, gone into business premises in - the' City on a Sunday afternoon, and thrown _ stones through the window. £ The younger boy was admonished and discharged, and the case against the elder was adjourned for a fortnight. Both were e ordered to pay 12s Gd towards the damage, e the payments to bo' made at the direction of the juvenile Probation Officer... [j In the Supreme Court judgment was given ' • -for the defendant' in the case in • which • 1 John Shadrach driest, a retired . farmer, claimed'-£750 general, damages and; £53 Bs- ™ 6d Special damages from Gordon' Melton Gunn, a dentist. The. damages were alleged []- to 'have arisen- but of an' nocident 'in which 1 the rlaintiff was knocked down by * car
driven by the defendant. Thp jury found that' there was contributory negligence .on the. part of the plaintiff, and gave a ver-' diet for special damages only. The Court held that the verdict amounted to one in favour of I the defendant, i and- / gave .judgment accordingly with costs according to scale. Mr W, J. Hunter and with him Mr E. S. Bowie, appeared' for the iind Mr M. J., GießSOn and with him: Dr. A. L. Blaslam for the defendant.
