Tho death is u .ounced of the Archduke Leopold von .Uapsbur- father of tho Grand Duke aton. MR A. GUNN. Mr Alexander Gunu, whose death occurred on ■ aturday, September sth, v 3 c e of tho early settlers of Canterbury, lie was born : -i Caithness, iotland, in 1852 and came to Now Zealand with his parents "n 1562 the ship Chrysolite. Ho was farming on the Hawk-ns with hit, fat: -r, and afterwards was manager for many years of tho Rainham Estate. On tho death of his father he took over the Hawkos-iew property at Racecourse Hill, which no farn success-. fully until 110 retired about ten years ago. During his career at Racecourse Ilili "» took an activo part in the affairs of the district, b?ing chairman of the South Malvern Road Board and an enthusir ic member of the Courtenay and Malvern Agricultural Associations. He was a very successful breeder of stock and an exhibitor for many years a 1 tho local agricultural shows. His w'f- predeceased him some twelvo years ago. He loaves a family of two sons—Messrs R, and J. Gunn, of Racecourse Hill—and three daughters— Misses S., M., and I. Gut , of Francis avenue, Christchurcli. His eldest daughter died in early life, and his second son, Errol, raado tin supreme sacrifice in the Great Vi ar. MR ir. ir. BILLING. The death ociirred at the East Goro Hospital last week of Mr Harold Hops Billing, who was for the past three years a member of tho staff of tho Gore branch of tho Bank of New South Wales. Mr Billing was bom in Tasmania iu 1000, and with his parents later residod in Wellington. Ho was educated at Wellington Collogo and joined the Bank of Now South Wales in 1910. Ho subsequently served at Edcndalo and Invorcargill, and joined tin Gore branch in 1027. MR H. V. ARMSTRONG. At tho Avomlalo Golf Houso the club flag was flown at half-mast over tlto week-end as a mark of respect to tli-o memory of Mr 11. V. Armstrong, who was a life-member of tho club. Mr Armstrong was an enthusiastic player, but ill-ln>alth over tho past two years bad koDt him from the links. A partner* with Mr H. Andersen in tho firm of Andersen and Hudson, leather and griudery merchants, Mr Armstrong was highly respected : n tho "trade throughout Canterbury. His natural philosophy nud unselfish, attitude in life enabled him to maintain a cheerful mien to friends and acquaintances alike over, tho long illness which resulted in his death in the early hours of Friday. ITo leaves a widow, one son, and three daughters to mourn their loss. MR S. M. H. GRENFELL. (PUX9S ASSOCIATION TSLCOSAV.) OAMARtJ, September 5. Tho death has occurred of Mr Samuel Michael Harding Gretifell, J.P., aged 67. He was one of Oamaru's best-known residents, and was chair* man of the Waitaki Hospital Board,- a member of tho Waipiata Sanatorium Committee, and nn officer of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He had been connected with practically every body and movement for the wolforo of Oam&ru.
