DEVIL'S ISLAND.
—♦ TWELVE CONVICTS ESCAPE. SIX DROWNED AT SEA. (UiU'J'EU L'RENS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTiUC TBLEGaWH— COfViIIOHT.) (Received September 3rd, 7.30 p.m.) PARIS, September 3. A. story of the escape of 13 convicts from Devil's Island is related in a letter received by the rolatives of an ex-prisoner, who was sentenced to 20 years for robbery. He and the eleven others .escaped whilo working in the jungle. They struggled for 15 days through dense undergrowth, enduring great hardships, living on berries and being menaced by wild beasts. Eventually they reached the coast, and commandeered two rowing-boats. Ono of the boats capsized in a storm, drowning six.
Tho others reached Venezuela whoro they have hopes of obtaining their freedom.
