DESTRUCTION AND THEFT.
HARBOUR BOARD'S CONCERN. "On several recent occasions the harbourmaster at Lyttelton (Captain T. M. Iluntei;) lias reported tho theft or destruction of the lifebuoys und lii'obooks provided by the Lyttelton Harbour Board on the jetties and at other point's in the harbour. Unfortunately this complaint frequently applies to tho Governor's Bay jetties and you will have noticed that the newspapers of August 15th reported that had it not been for the presence of Iho lifebuoy on the Governor's Bay low«r jetty a man Mould probably have been drowned," said the chairman (Captain tl. Monro), at yesterday's Board mooting* "One cannot condemn toy strongly the criminal folly uf* people why steal or destroy life-saving gear, and ! invite the co»operation of the public by assisting the Board to stop it. Even tnij Board's notices placed on tho jetties, warning tho public and offering a reward for the detection of offenders, have recently been destroyed. To such lengths will thoughtless folly ro." Mr E. J. Howard, 51.P., said that the schools should be ndvised of the value t>f the appliances. "You can't blnmo the children," said Mr W. J, Walter- ' The lnrnkins are the cause of the trouble."-
