BOROUGH COUNCIL

NEW BRIGHTON. A meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr 3. H. 6haw), Or*. J. 8. Ainsworth, E. h. Smith, A- B. Lawry, S. J. B. Bargrove, W. S. Bussell, B. E. Holloway, R. Snell, and T. B. Thomson. A motion of sympathy with Or. Thomson, in the death of his brother, was carried, the Council standing. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's letter askine for support of the Council's endorsement of the resolution by the Eden Chambor of Commerce, urging a reduction of lft per cent, interest on Government bonds, etc. The writer stated that as the allocation was along the lines ho had already advocated, he would give it his support. The Local Government Loam Board wrote authorising the Council to use the unexpended balance of the road-makmg plant loan, 1980, for the purchase of a tractor. A circular letter was received from the Main Highways Board advising that the Board had decided to increase the standard •rate of subsidy for maintenance works on main and secondary highways to £3 for *1 during the present financial year. The _ increased rate would not apply to any subsidy already approved for sealing or paving work, whether it be £2 for £1 or £3 for £l. • Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., forwarded * letter received from the Minister for Public Works granting a subsidy of £ for £ up to £2OO on the cost of materials for concrete protective walling along the foreshore at Pleasant Point reserve and the New Brighton sea front. The letter was received . and 'it was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr Sullivan. The necessary authority for the grant was received from the Public Works Department, Wellington. .. .. Mr K. Ballantyne wrote forwarding a cheque. of £5 in settlement for. work done on the section at the corner of May street and the Esplanade, and thanking the* Council and chairman of . works for the manner in whicn the work had been done.

Correspondence was received from the Hastings Borough' Council intimating that in connexion with the Building Construction Bill now before Parliament, the Council had passed the following resolution: — ... "That in the opinion of .this Council the provisipns contained in the_ Bill, if given effect to, would unduly bur<m those Tindertaking the' erection of buildings with unnecessary expense. The Council is further of opinion that model by-laws Sbonld he drawn up by the Government and made general, and as far as possible mandatory throughout tho Dominion. The Council enters.a protest against the proposals in the Bill regarding the .changes suggested to be made by the-Government." The letter asked the Council, in the event of its approving of the resolution, to communicate wtih the Prime Minister. . It was agreed to snpport the Hastings Borough Council.
