BOROUGH COUNCILS
WAJMATE. Tile Mayor (Mr George Dash) presided at tho meeting o£ tho AVaimatc Borough Council, there being a full attendance of councillors. Tho Minister for Internal Aff.urs wrote pointing out tho serious fira loss in tho Lwinion, and asking tho support of local authorities in the measures proposed by the Government. It was requested that reports be made on all suspicious fires in the letter was referred to the General Committee. „ , The Hastings Borough Council forwnrdod a resolution contending that the provisions of tho Building Construction Bill would mean unnecessary expense to people buildine; and it was further advanced that model by-laws should be drawn up by the Government' and made general, and as lar as possible mandatory, throughout the said an extraordinary thing about the proposed new building regulations was the percentage of expenses to the amount raised by levy. It was in the proportion of some £11,200 to i-2^oßo. Cr. Hod ires moved that the Hastings resolution be endorsed, and this was carried, the decision to be communicated the Prime Minister. The secretary of the South Canteibuiy Highways Group wrote giving particulars of the proposed scheme for a joint traffic which .the Waimato Boroagh Council is contributing a flat rate of £o for the year. Mr W. B. Ashwell, of Temuka, had been provisionally appointed.— Keferred to the General Committee. The Mayor stated the celerity with which the darinage work' was being done was \ery satisfactory. He added that the debentures, now at 5 per cent., were still selling freely. Cr. Hodges commented on the advantage of being able to take the drainage along Belt street from Manse to High street. The report was adopted. Tho reoort of the borough gardener (Mr A White) was received and adopted. In regard to the lighting of Shearman street, it was decided that the General Com"mee inspect the parking area in company with ' tho sergeant of police at ni ht. 1 wa3 also resolved to have tho direction line on Hi?h street corrected. Cr lodges referred to the great difficulty for a car-driver to negotiate -lie dome into TTiirh street when there were cars parked at the Waimnte Hotel.-This matter was also referred to the General Committee, and, further, the wisdom of retaining the Hi D h "?£ ■>< H..M. rfjtoa « could not grant a reduction of the Counc l a subsidy toward tho services of the Health Trppcctor, ns tho amount that should be subscribed by tho district was considerably short already.
