CROSSCOUNTRY RACE. K. >l. BARKER'S RECORD TIME. CHKISK HIRCH CLUB KKTAINS r.L ? r. I 'l'lle Ciivistcliuruh Harrier Cluti pia up a splondid performance in tiio Canterbury cross-country championship on Saturday afternoon, whou the team retained the interclub harrier challenge cup with a brilliant score of 11 points, made up with first, second, third, and fifth places. The possible is 3 0, first, second, third, and fourth, and to return so low a score as 11 is a wonder-, ful performance. '1 lie senior individual. championship was won by li. M. Barrer, who put up record time for the present course. G. 11. Watson was runner-up. Tho title-holder, A. I>. Pnrli (Baptist), ran a very disappointing race, pulling out after shout two miles had been covored. The junior championship was won by h. C. FulforJ (Baptist), who (i-iiislied tenth in the open race. TJie title-holder was Watson, wlio is now over. age. ' Weather conditions wero ideal ''or running, there being a bright sun and very little wiml. The course was in excellent ordei-, and has never been faster. There was no bog or water at any part, and tho ploughed land was fairly hard, and made for good running. The eighty starters set off on their long journey at a fast pace, but Eagle was left 1 a few yards, apparently expecting the run- j ncrs to be recalled, as some of them had I anticipated the starting signal a little. There was a good deal of changing of positions in, the first couple of miles, but by then the better runners bad sorted them"selves out a bit. and were leading the field, which was strung out over half a mile. Leaving the road after the old ploughed, patch had been crossed, li. 51". 15arrer was in front, a few yards ahead of Watson, j with Kane, Shepherd. Robinson. Pascoe, EH, Hay, Maclrley, Park, Ilichards, Fulford, Murray, .Coburn, Parrott, Savage, Strong, , Taylor, and Bambery following in that order. Watson, R. M. Barrer, Shepherd. Kane, Pascoe, ■Robinson, Hay, Mackley, Fulford, and Richards were the leaders when the runners crossed the road nearlj a mile further on, where Park dropped out. The Christchureh team was well placed at this stage, and no other club appeared to have a chance in the teams' race. R. 31. Barrer had a useful lead from Watson when they reached the corner or Sparks's road. Shepherd was still in third place, with- Kane, Pascoe, liobinson, and Mackley next. li. M.. Barrer, Watson. Shepherd: and Kane were tho leading quartet at the water jump, where Mackley had passed Pascoe, who was. followed by Jtobinson. There was 110 change in the order of the first four runners over the hills, R. M. Barrer winning a great race, with Watson second, Shepherd third, and. Kane fourth. Pascoe was too good for Mackley on the hills, and he finished well in fifth place, Mackley being nexl. Kobinsou Traa a«»onth, with ' 'Timam. Tutmere.
! Taylor and Murray, following. Taylor had done well over the last part oi the race, and had conic up several places. Fulford •was tenth, he, too, having done exceptionally well. j Three championships were hold in eonjurtcJ tion, the teams' championship and the open I and junior individual championships.
