MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON PRESBYTERY. The Ashburton Presbytery met yesterday, when the Moderator, the Rev. A. D. Kirkland, presided. The Rev. D. G. Verco, South Canterbury organiser of the New Zealand Alliance, gave an address on Prohibition. It was decided to request ministers of the various congregations to set up small committees to foster interest in the cause, in view of the forthcoming licensing poll. Dr. J. Gibb, of Wellington, wrote setting out the claims of the League of Nations, the annual conference of which will be held in Geneva in February next. He urged the need of every individual's support to bring about world peace. The clerk reported that a visitation would be made to Springburn on September 18th, and that the conference of Sunday school teachers would be held at Tinwald on August 31st. The Moderator presented a report on the Sunday school examinations held recently, which stated that the candidates from Carew, Lagmbor, and Mayfield had done remarkably well. It was decided to ask the Maori Home Mission Committee to arrange for a visit to Ashburton in the near future of Sister Jessie. It was resolved to support the proposed Bill to be placed before Parliament, dealing with the publication of indecent evidence, a copy of which was. received from the Rev. Dr. E. N. Merrington. St. Stephen's Girls' Society. The St. Stephen's Girls' Friendly Society met on Monday evening, when a Gipsy evening was held. Members of the St. Stephen's Literary and Social Club Choir and Senior Young Men's Bible Class were present. A recitation was given by Miss M. Page, and a song by Miss N. Healey, while members of the society gave a, folk dance. The remainder of the evening was spent in games. Votes of thankß were passed to the society for the enjoyable evening. Arch Chapter Lodge. The Royal Arch Chapter No. 4,: U.A.0.D., met on Monday evening, when the R.0.D., Sister R. J. Crum, presided over a good attendance, which included the 1.P., Grand President Bro. O'Donoghiie, of Christchurch. The P.A. degree was conferred on Sister L. H. McKay, of the Success of Ashburton, No. 222. It was agreed to hold a V.A. competition, and also an A.D. competition between the Star and Success of Ashburton, Nos. 14 and 22 respectively, on November 9th. Inter-School Matches. Football, basketball, and hockey teams travelled from Ashburton to play games with tho Christchurch Technical (jJollege on Monday. At the same time a good number of additional students and parents took advantage of the excursion to visit the Winter Show. About 150 students, in the charge of Messrs It. J. Thompson and A. T. Smith and Misses E. Aiken and E. Yesty, made the trip. The basketball match resulted in a tussle from the first whistle to the last. Half-time Bcore was 10-9, in favour of Ashburton-, while the final score was 21-20, in favour pf Christchurch. For Christchurch Miss V. Merrin threw 13 goals, while Miss J. Hansen and all the guards played excellently. For Ashburton Miss Joan Meeking "was the strongest player, throwing 13 goals, while Miss Ina McLennan was easily the best guard. The centres of each team were about equally balanced. In hockey, Christchurch was superior in the first spell, scoring three goals from solo efforts. The score at halftime was 3-0 in favour of Christchurch. Their combination was better than that of Ashburton, but in the second spell Ashburton brightened up and scored two goals to their opponents' one, making the final score 4-2. For Ashburton Miss Julia Brown, centre-forward, was outstanding, while Misses Eva Musson and Jessie Foster deserve mention. For Christchurch Misses Minnie Reid, centre forward, Hazel Williams, and Marjorie Tobin. half-backs, played well. Scorers were Miss J. Brown, Ashburton, 2; and for Christchurch, Misses Minnie Reid 3. Hazel Williams 1. Mr J. Almond was referee. In football, Christchurch played with the wind and had the better of the first half, most of the plav being in Ashburton's territory. Christchurch made full use of the wind and sun. stubbornly defended and used the line to advantage. Half-time score was 10-3. In the change-over, thejvind died down and the sun was in a better position. Ashburton forwards got going nicely and from a fine dribbling rush Stigley secured and scored. The remainder of the match was a contest between Ashburton forwards and Christchurch backs. Smart work by the Christchurch three-quarter line enabled their right wing to score on the line. After this the ball travelled'rapidly up and down the field, Ashburton forwards making determined rushes, but their backs were not strong enough to back them up. Christchurch backs were good both in defence and attack, and ■ the game was of a high standard throughout the second half, the final score being 19-6 in favour of Christchurch. Window-Judging Competition. The result of the window-judging competition, which was held last Week, has been decided. The judges, Messrs A. 11. Todd and A. P.. Raven, have placed Miss V. Timms and Mr W. Timms, both of Wills street, first equal. Aero Club. A meeting of the Social Committee of the Mid-Canterbury branch of the Canterbury Aero Club was held last evening, when Mr P. A Turner was elected chairman. It was decided to write to pilots from Blenheim, Christchurch; Timaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill asking them to take part in an air rally at Ashburton on September oth, to be followed by the club's annual ball in the evening. j DORIE. The bachelors and spinsters of Done held a successful dance in the Ardamine Hall on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from Ashburton, Rakaia, I Mead. Pendarves, Mount Somers, Wakanui. and Metbven. Much of the success of the evening was duo to the efforts of the joint secretaries, Miss I Gallagher and Mr C. Harrison,-and their committee. Excellent music- was supplied by the Denza Orchestra, Ashburton. and extras were played by Miss Robinson (Chertsey), and Mr T. Brown (Ashburton). A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Garland and Mr Breading, and a Monte dance by Miss I. Woodcock and Mr

H. Currev. Messrs W. Smith and D. Harrison were the M.C.'s. At the weekly, shoot of the Dona' Miniature Rifle Club, there was a good attendance. The prise was a trophy given bv* the club. Some good shooting was done, seven men qualifying in the first shoot. In the third shoot. J. Currey won, L. Kingsbury being second. RAKAIA. There was a good attendance at tho fortnightly meeting of the Court Star of Rakaia, A.O.F. C.R. Bro. R. B. Shellock presided, and welcomed a number of visiting brethren from the Ashburton Lodge Correspondence was received from the district officers, and it was decided to procure copies of the general ritual for the use _ of P.C.P.'s. It was reported that no sick members were on tne funds. It was decided to accept an invitation the Loyal Rakaia Lodge, 1.0.0.D., M.U., to a card tournament. After the meeting, a pleasant social evening was spent. There was a large attendance at a social held in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Saturday evening, under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild. Competitions were won bv Mrs H. Smith and Mr Cairns. Masie for the dancing was supplied by Miss F.-Cornelius ana Mr D. Henderson was M.C. METHVEN. A meeting of the committee of the Methven Ladies' Hockey Club was. held in the Road Board office on Monday evening, when arrangements in connexion with the forthcoming six-a-side tournament at Methven were advanced a ttage further. A letter was received from the sec- , retarv of the Methven Domain Board advising that a closed day had been granted for September 12th under the usual conditions. The secretary of the Methven xire Brigade Committee wvote thanking the club for their offer to share the pro- , ceeds of the tournament, and accepting the otfer and offering every assistance. . A sub-committee was appointed to attend the next meeting ot the iire Brigade Committee. It was decided to hold Senior A five-a-side, Senior B and Junior six-a-side tournaments, miniature cups to be presented to each member of the winning teams in the Senior A and B competitions, and silver badges to the junior team. The secretary of the Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association wrote advising that permission had been granted ny the Association to hold the tournament and also that they would be pleased to arrange for referees and other officials if required. The question of afternoon tea and arrangements for an entertainment on the evening of the tournament was held over for the meeting with the Fire Brigade Committee Tho monthly meeting of the committee of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Monday o\ening. The secretary reported that he had in touch with the local Unemployment Committee but the work required to be done would not come under the unemployment relief scheme. toral Association in reference to steps proposed to be taken for the further improvement of- flocks and herds of the Dominion. The Association stated that considerable improvement had alreadv taken place by the action of breed societies, but further action was necessary to eliminate the sale of scrub sires. Speaking to the letter Mr Freeman was in favour of the proposal outlined. The Methven Association were the founders of a flock ewe competition which had been copied broadcast by other Associations Improvements were being made on the dams' side, and the same should apply to the ma ] eS Mr'Macale said he considered that in difficult times like the present quality in breeding was essential and the opportunity to try to improve breeding was never more apparent. Mr R. J. Low considered that the proposal was a worthy one, but he said he ••ealised the difficulties confronting them in regard to the proposals. . . After further discussion Mr Freeman, in moving a motion in support of the proposals, stated that any genuine breeder would welcome the Canterbury Association's proposals. The motion was seconded by Mr John Watson and carried unanimously. Mr Low brought forward a further motion; "That the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board {ie approached to give a suostantial trophy for the pur- < pose of encouraging the best blood in breeding ewes, to produce the best quality fat lambs for export." This was seconded by Mr H. JFreeman and carried unanimously. It was decided to accept the offer of Messrs Suttons, Ltd.. for a challenge cup for '.lie field roots competition. The honorary treasurer, Mr H Green, presented the balance-sheet for the year just ended, which showed that In spite of difficult times there was a credit balance of £2Ol 7s 2d ;The balance-sheet was considered highly satisfactory and adopted, subject to audit. Mr Macale brought up the question of wheat duties and the Prime Minister's proposal in his Budget to limit the maximum price for new season s wheat to 4s 6d. He pointed out what he considered would be the result if a surplus of wheat came about next season. Ihere was no hope of export and the wheat pool would not be able to handle it. If the price remained as was suggested the grower would be producing at a loss Mr G. A. Franks strongly supported Mr Maealo and others who stated that the burden of' reduction was resting unfairly on farmers, while others were not taking their, fai>' Bhare of the reduction. . .
