Iu the days of the early gold rushes, when money was plentiful, cricket tourneys were popular in some parts of Now Zealand. Oi>q of the difficulties of tho time was to get good wickets. At Duneoin ft swamp was covered with clay, and on this was formed an. area or turf. When the first big game was n©ld the swamp had been developed for only three months, hut it was considered very good, although the ground tremhled fit every step. Part of tlio match had to be played on a new wicket at right angles to tho original P'™- English cricketers who toured the Colony 60 years ago adapted themselves to the conditions and their elevens frequently played against team s of twenty or more. In one of the matches an English bowler had a? 1 average of 26 wickets for 43 runs, and in another four wickets were takenwith four successive balls. Not until Lol*d Hawke'g team toured New Zealand in were a few teams of eleven players included among those who faced the visitors.
It is recorded in the "Nelson pioces&n Gazette" that on July 21st the Bishop Nelson enterecj on the twentieth year of his episcopate. The Archbishop of New Zealand entered the twenty-second year of his cpiscoJ;ul,lar y 16 th. Ho u;asj Bishop or \V aiapu from his consecration untii September 30th, 1913, when he was translated to Auckland. The Bishop or Christchurch was consecrated as HisJjop of Barrow-in-Furness on September -Ist, 1909, and "translated to Uinstchureh on August 24th. 1926, so J l ®. 18 , paring the end of l.is twenty-third year.
