PERSONAL. (speciaC to the press.) GREYMOUTH, August 5. Mr Ncill Mouatt left to-day on a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs R. Smith left to-day on a visit to Wellington. Mr D. McKay, of Greymouth, who was operated on on Tuesday at Christchurch, is making good progress towards recovery. Mr D. M.. Lane, of the Railway Department at Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Moana. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., chairman of the Assessment Court, arrived yesterday to conduct a sitting of the Court at Greymouth. Mr Lcs Stapp, formerly of the staff of tho Greymouth Post and Telegraph Office, and now of Wellington, is spending a holiday with his sister, Mrs W. Fairhall, Marsdcn road, Greymouth. Mr and Mrs J. Callanan, of Runanga, are visiting Karamea. Mr P. Curran, who has been spending a holiday at Wellington and Christchurch, has returned to Greymouth. _ Miss Molly Perry, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to Hokitika yesterday. Mr 11. T. Parry, who has been attending the conference of dairy managers at Christchurch, returned to Hokitika yesterday. ■ Dr. W. McKay, who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned to Greymouth. Mr and Mrs A. T. Brooks, former residents 'of Keefton, havo decided to settle there. Otira Tunnel. Freight railed through the Otira tunnel from tho West Coast last week amounted to 11,094 tons, compared with 14,794 tons for tho same period last year, and 12,720 tons in 1929.

. Judgment Summonses. At the Grcymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr \V. Meldrum, &.M., presiding, W. Stuart was ordered, on a judgment summons, to pay forthwith to the Westland Timber Workers' Union £8 17s Cd, with solicitor's fee 15s 6d, m default fourteen days' imprisonment. Stephen McCarthy was ordered to pay Tim Sinnott £2 15s 6d forthwith in default seven days' imprisonment. Tribute Party Not Approved. On the grounds that he was a member of a tribute party, it urged at a meeting of the Eunanga Co-operative Society that J. McTeague's name be removed from the society as a committeeman and a trustee. Considerable discussion took place, the committee taking the stand that it was non-politi ca.l, and that Union differences should remain outside its doors. Finally a motion was carried that Mr McTeague be-asked to resign any official position held by him on the society. The motion was carried by a small majority.

School Committee. A meeting of tho Hokitika School Committee was held last evening, Mr, A. C. Armstrong, chairman, presided. The question of having electric light installed in the school was discussed, and left with tho chairman to arrange. Referenco was made to a statement of tho county chairman at tlie last meeting of the County Council when the com-, mittee was asking for a donation towards tho school dental clinic. It was resolved that Mr Searle be requested to withdraw his statements, as they wero contrary to fact. The dental hygiene officer wrote advising that Ross and Harihari clinic district would include Kokatalii, and that a nurse from Hokitika might be- required to attend to these districts, in which case they must bo prepared to pay the upkeep, which would be £3O per annum each per nurse. Dental Nurse James reported having 538 dental operations for July. Nurse M. Pitt reported 460 operations. Unemployment. ■ At a meeting of tho Greymouth Unemployment Committee, at which Mr P. J. McLean presided, it was reported that £55 had been spent out of the Mayor's Fund. The committee reviewed, a letter from tho Brunner mines regarding the development of fire-clay products, It was decided to write to the Unemployment Board regarding the matter. It was considered that the Unemployment Board should encourage secondary industries as much as possible. Reefton Women's Institute. On Tuesday evening tho St. Stephen's Hall at Reefton was crowded, when the Women's Institute celebrated »ts first birthday. THe schoolroom was prettily decorated with greenery and flags. Before the commencement of tlio programme, the president (Mrs A. Watson) was presented with a beautiful bouquet o? spring flowers by Miss Connie Panckliurst.

Solos were contributed by Mrs Discariati, Mis Campbell, and Miss Hay-Mc-KenziC, accompanied by Miss H. StalInrd; a recitation was given by Freda Patterson, and a duet, violin and piano, was given by Misses Watsnn and Panckhurst. Community singing was also much enjoyed. The birthday cake was made by Mrs P;inckhurst and iced by Miss Arnott, and it was cut by tho president, all present receiving a piece. The winners of the competitions were as follows: Best song representation, Miss Hay-McKenzie; song competition. Mrs Auld and Mrs Discaciati, equal; telegram, Miss Rollenson; bouettes. Mrs Auld. Shooting Accident. A shooting accident occurred in the Greymoutk Drill Hall last evening. During the progress of a match fired by the Miniature Eifle Club, Henry Williams, the marker, was injured. A bullet fired by a competitor pierced a rusted portion, of the iron • ,r,, en and went through a leg behind the knee. Obituary. The death of Mrs Julia Devaney, widow of Mr Thomas Devaney, of the

Clnb Hotel, Jiokitilca, occurred this morning after a long illness. Mrs De vaney was a native of Islandmore, County Clare, Ireland. S' of age, over fifty years of that period having been spent in New Zealand. For many years she was a resident of Kumara, She is survived By two daughters and two sons.
