REPAIRS TO HAUTURU.

(PB.E3S ASSOCIATION TBLEOKAiI.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 3. The motor-vessel Hauturu, which lost her propeller off Patea at the weekend, was rested on a sandbank to-day and a new shaft inserted. Slio wilt transfer her Wanganui cargo to the lionaki to-morrow and sail for Onehunga. AVOIDING THE SUEZ CANAL. WHEAT SHIP CHARTERS. Two large British steamers were chartered on May-28th in the London market to load wheat in Australia for the United Kingdom or Continent during July, and they will make tho voyage of many thousands of miles from the Tyne to the Commonwealth in ballast. One vessel is to load wheat in bulk at Sydney, N.S.W., at a freight rate of 28s a ton, and the other is to load wheat in bags at South Australia at a rate of 30s a ton, and the option of discharge at a Mediterranean port is given in each case. Like many other vessels which have recently left Britain for Australia in ballast, tho two ships are to make tho voyage via the Cape, in order that the serious cost of the Suez Canal dues may be avoided. Presumably the ships will load a considerable quantity of coal in the Tyno to be used as bunkers during their long voyage, and then the question Mould have to be considered not only of canal dues on the vessels in ballast, but also, possibly, of the higher rate charged for loaded ships. Ii is believed that the present intention is that tho steamers shall also return from Australia by the long route, via the Cape. Italian importers usually take a certain quantity of Australian wheat for tho purpose of mixing, and it is understood that some Italian charterers endeavour to secure a clause in the charterparty stiuplating that the vessels shall return from , Australia through the Suez Canal, in view of thq considerable saving of time. Some owners decline, however, to agree to such a clause, and would rather bring their vessels Home, by the long sea route and then into the Mediterranean, and even to Naples, by the long routo. The additional time may represent several days' steaming, - but owners prefer to meet the cost of that - than to pay the Suez Canal dues. Rates of freight are now on a basis at tfhich all expenses have to bo calculated very carefully indeed. TRANS-PACIFIC SERVICE.
