WAR ON TRADE DEPRESSION, VIEWS OF SINGERS' MANAGINGDIRECTOR. An example which might well bo followed by other, industries has been set to the world by Singer and -Co., Ltd., one of the largest producers of British motor-cars. This company has declared war on trade depression, and for the next thrfee months it is organising an intensive sales campaign. During this period the amount of money originally allocated for 'Press publicity will be more than trebled. Mr W. E. Bullock, managing director of the company, stated in an interview that he had always found Press publicity esseutial. "It is the best value-for-money advertisement oi which industry can possibly avail itself," he said. "We are trebling our expenditure on newspaper advertisements, and 1 am- confident that tnis procedure, despite difficulties abroad and one strike after another at Home, will bring us financial success and at the same time will enable us to employ more British workers. "When trade, generally, is bad some manufacturers think that they should retrench and economise in their advertising expenditure. My own view is the exact opposite: I say, meet trade depression with' a fight and in this fight the heavy guns are newspaper advertisements." . .
AUSTRALIAN FORK. A STATEMENT DENIED. \ ♦ * Commenting; on Mr Hawke'& :tssertion that Australian pigs have been imported into Christchurcli, Mr Bottrell, of T. H. Green nnd Co., Ltd., who ar£ one of the largest firms of bacon cufers in the South Island, expressed surprise that a public man of Mr Hawke's standing should make such a pronouncement before making enquiries from those closely connected with the industry. Mr Bottrell was' definite in his statement that no bacon curers of Canterbury had imported or 1 thought of importing Australian pigs, and a perusual of ships manifest at ri customs returns would prove this. The supply df New Zealand pigs was quite auipic for curers' requirements. Although at presents prices were low in Australia, he doubted if pigs of equal quality could bo landed to compete with local prices—when all the various charges such as killing, freezing, freight, insurance, duty, and landine expenses were added. "Wo are all wanting to encourage our farmers to grow pigs, and it behoves both curers and oonsumers to support their local products," said Mr Bottrell. ' . Mr Bottrell said he understood that Mr Hawke's statement was based on, hearsav, and not on any investigations he had mnde himself, and he thought it only just to local bacon curers that Mr Hawke should withdraw his damaging' statement unless he, could substantiate it.
