[exclusive to the piuess.] [BY A DISTRICT COMMISSIONER.] On June 15th the District Commissioner, Major J. W. Cramptob, paid a visit to the Linwood Group Headquarters to witness a "going up ceremony" | of a large number of Cubs within the gfoup who have reached the Scout age. The ceremony was conducted by Group S.M. Greenwood, and was attended by members of the committee and. parents of the boys. After the'ceremony the visiting Commissioner presented Scoutmaster L. Berry and Assistant Scoutmaster W. R. Francis with their warrants, and congratulated them on their appointments. During tho evening Commissioner Crampton explained the working of the Citizens' Relief Association, known as the "pound scheme," and asked for the co-operation and support of all Scouts, which should be made through their Group Headquarters Towards the close of the meeting a pleasing ceremony was performed by Mr* Greenwood, who, on behalf of the Linwood Rovers, Scouts, and Cnbs, made a presentation to Cub Commissioner W. E. Desmond and Mrs Desmond on the occasion of their marriage. •A further, presentation was also made to Commissioner F. J. Borrie, of a troop surgeon's badge, as a mark of appreciation for the .very line ambulance instructional work that he has done in connexion with the Linwood Group. At Heathcote. a largo number of Scouts, under A.S.M. Cooper, and Cubs, under Cubmaster B. Salt, attended a church parade 011 Sunday last. The Rev. F. A. Tooley gave the address and also took the Scout promise, which has now become a monthly custom, and is made very impressive. The service was concluded by singing the National Anthem.. A large number of Scouts in the Woolston and Ileatlicote Group have already presented themselves to Commissioner Borrie for examinatioh in first aid, and good results have been achieved. This group is very fortunate in having secured the services of Mr Garner as signalling instructor and Mr Gilbert as instructor in first aid. Preparations are now in hand in Woolston for the running of a camp
fund' social, in aid of general camping equipment. To celebrate the fourth birthday of the Richmond Pack, a big night was held recently in Richmond. The Rev.,F. Greenwood (Group Scoutmaster, Linwood Group) was in the chair, and opened the meeting with some interesting remarks-on Cubs and Cubbing, and then inspected the Pack of 30 Cubs and two Old Wolves. Mr Greenwood complimented the Cabs on their smartness in "turn out" and good behaviour. Later in the evening he presented a Scout knife and Bheath to Sixer J. Cobbe, Service Stars to Cubs A. and R. Keats, and Tenderpads to J. Fairweather, and K. Forne." The Brown Six, which won pick Turpin's ride to York, were presented with a first-aid outfit, given by Miss F. Donaldson. • A splendid evening was spent in gamesi and competitions, and the Cubs gave a camp firo display in. .songs, recitations, and the Bagheera play, and dance. At supper Cub A. Fraser cut the birthday cake, given by Mrs Parker, and handed a piece to everyone present. After an enjoyable time the evening was brought to a close with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." A large number of Scouts-assembled at French Farm on Saturday last, and were kept busy in the various Scout work necessary to qualify for the Firstclass Badge. The examining party for I signalling consisted of Commissioners Rich and Tidswell, Rover Lockwood, and Chief Petty Officer Reilly, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Signalling was considered by tho examiners to be of a very high order, which is very pleasing to hear, as this 1 subject has not been a strong point in the past. .The stews easily the best efforts of the day with candidates in cooking, although some other very fine dishes were also sampled. In some cases, Scouts who were otherwise good cooks lost 1 heavily through lack of attention to cleanliness and personal smartness. Out of 23 candidates, however, there | were only three failures. j Th. results in signalling are not yet to hand, but the following were sue- * , cessful in the cooking test:—Scouts W. I Barber, T. Bedelph,* H. Campbell, A. Boyd, J. Cole, J. Flemming, M. For-1 rest, S. W&de, P. Minson, G. Hay, H. ' Irwin, R. Long, C. W. Parkinson, lan i Thompson, F. Shaw, K. Jones, M. JSrr | den, W. Neely, A. R. Perrott, A. j Plows, and J. Skinner. Commissioner J. Rich will shortly pay a visit to Rakaia to give a lantern lecture on Scouting. i .Scoutmaster W. Fossey, of Amberley Troop, has been issued with a warrant.
