PERSONAL, Mr E. T. Ings, of the harbourmaster's staff, has passed the necessary examination for a master's or mate's radio operator's certificate. Belief of Distress. A good response has been made as a result of the further appeal made by the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) for money and goods to assist distressed families the'port. Gifts yesterday included a case of new boots and shoes, for men, women, and children, a half a ton of coal, a carcase of mutton, and a large assortment of groceries and other foodstuffs. Most of tho groceries and food was distributed during the day, and a quantity of the footwear, mostly to children's sizes, was issued.. ; Beamen's 'lnstitute. A whist drive under the "auspices of the Sumner Guild was held in the Seamen's Institute on Thursday evening. At the conclusion of the play prizes given by the Guild were distributed by Mrß le Budde.
