Not Seasoned. Amorist has not done any jumping since he last raced at the southern Christmas Meetings, but invariably his diiplay in a race has not been affected by absence of schooling. He is undoubtedly a class above those opposing him at Ashburton to-day, but has not done tiio necessary work on the tracks to make him a dangerous contestant. Another, in Lancer, will also be at a disadvantage on the same account, and he will require a good deal of racing to get him down to satisfactory condition. Riders at Aahburton. Biding engagements have beon made for to-day's programme at Ashbnrton, aa follows: —H. Young': Quantum; C. Carmont: Thursby, Semper Paratus; A. E. Ellis: Taragona, Pakitere, Glenrow*n; D. O'Connor: Troilus, Oriflamb, Starshooter, Ramo; A. J. Peart: ThurIna,, Noteworthy; B. Brodie: Eascal; D. Cotton: On Top, Weatherly, Locksley; J. W, Jennings: Elude, Eoyal Love; G. Humphries: Dunraven, Moorbird; G. Salt: Amorist, Arikiwai; B. CSoveny: Ball Dress; M. Kirwan: Charmeuse, Countermarch; C. McCarthy: Taku Tama; I. TUson: Lancer, Fresh Breeze, Sharp Thorn; P. He has not yet contested a hurdle event, • and has not had an opportunity to school in company, but has ohown promise in his few solo essays to date, and yesterday at Bicearton, with C. Carmont la the saddle, he gave a clean and font display over two fences. He will no| warrant much attention, however, uxriil lie has shown his ability in public.
Jumping at B&caxton. Aberfeldy (I. Tilaon)- negotiated a rmtnd of the country at Riccarton yestesday. He wtui inclined to run -down hie fenees, and his display was not so attractive aa that of some of his previous efforts. Boyal Mint*- (L Tilson) showed bis Ability by jumping two hurdles at a iatt pace. He & in good order at preseat, and bids fair to stand up to an* sther preparation. B«fftted Debut The oolours of Mr E. S. Luttrell, which h*ve not been seen in public for • considerable time, will be reproduced at Ashburton to-day, when his representative, Hoorbird. is due to make her faitlal appearance in a race. This filly wbo Is apjproaehiiig her fifth year, and h*s ten In steady commission tot nearly three years, is endowed with plenty of mii bnt has sever been subjected to mtmooM preparation owing to recurring leg twmbleJ mate torn ftopotftlon. , Cfaumeuse will be having her .first mem at Ashbnrton to-day since she was stKiflamrfnl la the Great Easter Handi* f*H», She has a. solid weight to carry, but is & elass mare, and provided the mittff is on the firm side she will have tobe seriously considered. Charmeuse irOl probably have another race at Oasuru next Saturday, and these two efforts should materially help towards the preparation for the Winter) Cup, for which event, even at-this stage, she la entitled to rank as aa early prospect. A Xttatr WwfiSfc Gallivanter, an acceptor for the hurdle race, at Ashburton to-day, is capable of springing a surprise. At the Washdyke Meeting last week he was turned round when the runners for tibe, Pukaki Hurdles were dispatched and at the end of half the journey was a long way in the rear. Over the last three or four fnrloags, beirsvftr, he made up a lot of tarway, and shj&wing a burst of speed froa the top of the straight he finished dose up to tho fourth horse, Aladdili. He is A five-year-old gelding by Gay Lad frohi Lady Fair, and is owaed. by the Orari trainer, B. 0.
Grand National Meeting. The nominations received by the Can- ] terbury Jockey Club for the six principal events to be decided at the Grand | National Meeting total 214, the same number as twelve months ago. The details are as follows, last year's figures being indicated in parentheses: —Grand National Steeplechase, 31 (29); Winter Cup, 50 (53), Grand National Hurdles, 34 (32), Beaufort Steeplechase, 30 (33), Sydenham Hurdles, 34 (33), Lincoln Steeplechase, 35 (34). The list for the Grand National Steeplechase contains the best of the season's cross-country performers, the only notable absentee being Master Lu, winner of the recent Great Northern Steeplechase. Last year's winner, Aurora Borealis, is also missing, but the two minor place-getters, Corneroff and Omeo, are again engaged, and Snowfall, Matu, and Kapuna, who were amongst the unplaced division, have been afforded another nomination. Previous winners in Tuki (1925) and Wiltshire (1928 and 1929) are also included. Otherwise the list is made of horses ossaying their first attempt at National honours. The North Island is represented by 18 of the 31 nominated. The Winter Cup has drawn a great field of proved handicap performers, the South Island in this case holding the stronger hand with 34 out of the total of 50. For the. Grand National Hurdle Eace the 34 nominations include 21 from the North Island. Again the best class of hurdler available in goth Islands is represented, and in addition to laet year's victor, Carinthia, the list contains important winners this season in Princo Lu, High Pitch, Conjurer 11.,' and Makeup, and other prominent performers in Lucess, Apache, Claremore, Nucleus, Amorist, Antrim Boy, Bed Fuchsia, Mister Gamp, and WakoKing. The majority of the horses nominated for the three events named figure in the big races at the Wellington Winter Meeting, and their form at Trentham will naturally be followed with much interest. '
Stud Book Upkeep. Volume I. of the "Now Ze&land Stud Book" in 1900 showed a small credit balance, but since then the cost has had to be borne by the Conference. The last volume (XI.) cost £1366 9s 10d, and sales amounted to £545 19s. The Stud Book is- an indispensible adjunct to racing, and many clubs and others interested are lax in tfieir recognition of this fact. *
Proposed Australian Trip. The Wellington sportsman, Mr. C. Boyle, hqs booked passages for his three horses, Conjurer il., Panther, and Rational 11., on the Ulimaroa, which leaves Wellington for Sydney on July 9th, he is not definitely certain yet whether the trip will be undertaken. He has entered Conjurer IL and Panther freely for the Wellington Meeting, so that they may be raced at Trentham if the Australian trip is abandoned. Trentham Yearling Sales.
The principal studmasters in the Dominion are reported to be preparing teams of exceptional merit for the National Bales of 1932. Messrs •T. H. Lowry, A. .F. Roberts, 6. M. Curne, John Donald, G. A. Kain, and the Eldersjie stud all have "big drafts in hand, and .this year the more successful of the mares in their studs are to be represented by -'colts. ■ The sales will be remarkable for the fact that -the champion sire of the season,. .Limond, will be represented by a dozen youngster#, the majority of which are colts. There are full relatives to Commendation, Veilmond, Agrion, aid Honour. Such a representation from Koatantii alone will give zest to ihe sales. Night Bald will also have.a refcord number of colts to Represent him. These will benls best bred representation to date, as. several studs will have colts from mares of ireptite by the sire of Phar Lap and Night* march in their drafts, The brother of the great Phar Lap will, of pourse, be an especial attraction. This colt is reported to he a good one. / ' TROTTING NOTES. Brackets at Ashburton. Aimwo^thy 1 aiTd plain Silk will be bracketed in the and Winch* more Handicaps at the Ashburton Meeting to-day. To amy Again. Grand Voyage, the winner of, the 1922 Otahuhu Cup, who was the first to start the sequence of Australian winof that race, was recently nominated in an-event at Richmond, and was handicapped on a 2min 20seo mark for. the Flying Mile. The champion Australian trotter has. not raced for five yeiars and it will be interesting to note how he performs. , ' Blngen Blood. •>
Tie Abbey did not return to Aldington with Sunchild and Golden Pedro, the other members of W. J. Tomkinaon's team. Golden Pedro ./.is an aged Tas-manian-bred gelding by Dop Pedro from Golden Direct. The name suggested Don ProntO'blood, but such is not the ease, aB 6on Pedro was by ; Mauritius (imp.)" from Miss Vera OapeJ (imp.). Auckland T.C.'a Eemit. Amongst the many remits to bfr considered at the Trotting Conference next month is the Auckland. Trotting Club motion: "That the New Zealand/Trotting Association bo abolished, and District Committees instituted in lieu thereof, and that the conference executive take steps to have the necessary alteration to the rules' drafted for submission to a further meeting of the Conference for approval and confirmation." Visitor's ViWs.' " Mr O, T. Conover, a prominent official in the light harness sport in America, was present at the Auckland Trotting Club 'a race Meeting, and he paid a high tribute to the Club, for the manner in which the fixture was conducted, and for the fine sport provided. Not only was hj? surprised, but greatly astonished when he saw the fini course, grand-stands, and lawns at Alexandra Park, and) he expressed the opinion that the Epsom trotting course was bettor than 75 per cent, of the courses in the United States. BingenSplers. Spiers, who is engaged in the VPinohmore Trot at Ashburton to-day is a brother to Jean McElwyn, Herbilwyn, and 'Nelson McElwyn. He was raced as a trotter in his early career, but now races as a hoppled'pacer. The last' race he "won was the Napier Handicap at the Hawke's Bay .Meeting , last Reason, when trained at Hawora. He is now an inmate of B. B. Berry 'b Templeton stable! * • Bibbonwood. Bibbonwood started his racing career In a vety modest way, as he made h|a first pablio appearance _in a ponyraceat Tahuna Park and incidentally suffered one of the very few defeats that appear against his name in the records of this country. During his three seasons on
the track Eibbonwood started 23 times and won, including heats against time, on 17 occasions. His record, in fact, amounts to an almost unbroken run of success. As a four-year-old Eibbonwood went to the post in 12 races, and alter missing three times then commenced a run of nine consecutive wins. These included his match against Fritz and a match against the Australian and New Zealand-record, which he lowered without being fully extended to 2min 9sec, after going his first half in lmin 4sec, and coming home comfortably at the finish. Eibbonwood was only a pony when he appeared at Tahuna Park m 1001, and ran unplaced in a field of liliputians, who were racing for a 25 sovs stake. He was then taken to New Brighton and won m 2min 35sec, antl later at Addington in 2min 33sec. Up to this stage he had been handled by the late M. Edwards. The following season there was a change of stables, and after N. Price won with him at the Addington Spring Meeting he went under the solo charge and reinsmanship of -D. J. Price, and raced 'in the nomination of the ex-Dunedinite, Mr C. J. Coombs. Eibbonwood won six times out of eight starts, including a walkover in a three-year-old handicap. Then came his historic record of nine consecutive wins. lie opened Ins third season on the track by running second to St. Simon and following with two unplaced performances. This was early in the season at the Addington August Meeting. At the Addington November Meeting he won the New Zealand Handicap and the Free-for-All, going 2min 15 4-ssec, in the latter event. At the Addington February Meeting, Eibbonwood won the principal handicap run over two miles in 4min 35 4-ssec, and during the same afternoon he captured a purse of 50 sovs, for lowering the i-3-cord from 2min 13sec to 2min 11 2-ssec.

Oriflamb ran a promising race in heavy going at Wingatui, filling third place to West Dome and Tunamoe in the hack steeplechase on the second day, after leading the greater part of the two miles journey. He is, however, a difficult horse to follow, and is not likely to be improved by mixing steeplechasing and hurdling. Thurina should be all the better for .his initial effort last Saturday, but inexperience is likely again to tell against him.
